Constipation

My daughter has suffered with constipation intermittently for about 12 months. She openly admits that she is 'scared to push it out' I as her mum tend to over think everything and feel there must be something more serious going on. When I speak with health professionals they tend to tell me it's very common and not to worry!! :-(

Try not to worry as your concerns may well be picked up on. It it's normal what's she's saying, it may be that a some point she's hurt her bottom while pooing and now that's all she thinks about when needing to poo. My son was the same. Is she taking a poo softener?

Thanks for your reply. She's been placed on movicol and lactulose at present. She had a suppository last night but fell out before time to take effect. How soon should she open her bowels after upping the dose of lax do you know? She's in so much discomfort today with her bottom that she's not been able to go to school :-(

It's difficult to say exactly the movical will soften it and the lactulose acts as the lax, I would say it depends on how much of a build up or possible impaction there's is. Keep her fluids up. have you been told how much you can up the movical? keep her bottom moist with nappy cream or Vaseline to stop sores too as soiling will be frequent in the next few days. Hope some of this might help. Keep in touch.

Thanks for your help again, I appreciate your input so much. My GP just advised to keep her on two movicol twice daily and then lactulose twice daily, then it's a case of trying to judge a good maintenance dose for a while. My mind just went in to over drive with the suppository coming out. She's still not eaten very much today again so I'm not really sure what she should actually be pooing out xx

It's amazes me how someone so small can make us panic so much.

The suppository will work pretty quickly if you can get it to work. I know that when inserting them they should be lying on their side but can't remember which is best as it does make a difference according to the Incontinence nurse. Have you got an Incontinence service where you are? I would also get back in touch with the Dr if your still concerned to clarify how long they think it should take to clear and what to do if things don't improve over the next week.

Movicol has now been increased to four sachets twice daily as well as lactulose twice daily. We've now got an awful lot of leakage which is distressing her even more. Still very little food since last Saturday, should I really be expecting a 'formed' poo?? She really doesn't seem herself either, just laying down all the time :-(

I'm afraid that leaking is all she do for the time being. She won't form a proper poo with the lactulose. The other thing we found was that it did make my son feel lousy and give him a bloated feeling. I would expect her to have a sore bottom as soiling can be acidic. Keep her fluids up as she'll need it for the movical to work. Hope she feels better soon keep in touch

how old is she? Is she embarrassed to leave the class if she needs to use the loo? I would start by adding greens and fruits to the diet as well as liquids and maybe some of the powdered herb Senna to her drinks.
