Impacts to emotions/feelings following seizures

I'm just wondering if anyone else experiences a prolonged recovery period following seizures in terms of your emotions/feelings? I had seizures during the night Friday and then slept pretty much until Sunday morning. I don't rememer much of Saturday but my family tell me I did have a few more seizures (always in my sleep). Yesterday I just felt weird, so hard to put it into words but almost like things were different even though it was all familiar as I didn't leave the house. I do also have a mental health diagnosis (that's been controlled by meds for several years) so I'm really not sure if it's that. I know this probably makes no sense but I just needed to get it out as feeling scared today and useless.

Hi, my seizures are infrequent (around once a year). I always struggle with the recovery though, when they happen my seizures are bad, I end up in hospital about half of the times they happen. Afterwards I’m exhausted, slow, easily upset and inclined to tears. I think the quickest recovery is around a week it can take up to a month to feel totally normal. I hold down a really tough and stressful job with long hours and heavy decision making, so feeling like this is totally abnormal for me.

When I’ve spoken to my neurologist about this, he said there is nothing that can be done about it other than to stop the seizures (which we haven’t managed yet). Most recently I was away overseas when the last one happened, 4 days in hospital with concussion. The local neurologist offered me antidepressants, which I refused as I really don’t want to go down the road of starting on them or relying on them.

I really wish that there was more work and research done on this, for me it makes the seizure a much more major and unmanageable event. Good luck.

Hi , sorry to hear of your experience. I developed epilepsy around 5 years ago and have since had about 6 TC seizures . The last one was a couple of weeks ago and this time particularly I noticed feeling anxious, panicky and though a little hard to describe but like I’d been removed from my own mind & normal thought patterns with feelings associated to random memories from the past popping up . This lasted for over a week before settling down but very unsettling at the time . Just to add I have read that epileptics can experience a lot more feelings of deja vu . Hope this helps in some way

oh yes I feel exactly the same my last one was a week ago today

I have felt so low constantly on the verge of tears

The way I look at it is our brains have been completely messed up by all the electrical activity

I find after every seizure I do spiral into a deep depression and state of anxiety

I just want to reassure you this is normal to feel this way but it is absolutely debilitating

Just wondering if you have any support at hom eg family friends

Or any support related specifically related to your epilepsy

Like a therapist

I’m lucky enough to have a neuro psychologist

All I can suggest is to take each day as it comes

Even if you have to take it hour by hour

Which I do mostly

Rest sleep as much as you need listen to your body

Hydrate

Meditate

Eat well

Very gently ease yourself back into your normal every day routine

Sometimes it can take me around 1 month to feel back to normal

I’m so sorry you feel shit.

Remembering it will pass

I really hope you have a good support system at home.

take care xxx

Im so sorry to hear about you concerns, but I am completely the same. I had a seizure on Thursday , today is Saturday, since Thursday I’ve not left my house, it’s taken me ages to get over it, I’ve slept for hours , and feel so lethargic. I’m hoping I will have the energy to gomto my sons football match tomorrow. I hope it works out for you.
