Just been diagnosed with epilepsy and I’m on 50mg of Lamotrigine Torrent. I am get waves of panic, palpitations, pins and needles up my arms and legs every 10 minutes. It hasn’t stopped for a couple of days. Is this normal?

Hi MariaC1970

These new symptoms sound very unpleasant.

As suggested by Matt051877, people can experience these symptoms with a focal seizure. When epilepsy medicine is being introduced, the low dosage may be controlling some of the epilepsy activity but not all. This can lead to someone having focal seizures.

With focal seizures the epileptic activity starts in just a part of your brain. You may remain alert during this type of seizure, or you may not be aware of what is happening around you. You may have movements that you can’t control, or unusual sensations or feelings.

Focal seizures can be very brief or last for minutes.

It would be best to talk to your neurologist for a medical opinion on this, if you continue having them frequently or if there is no improve.

You should have been given a information sheet with your lamotrigine that lists possible side-effects. If you haven't you can view this at ttps://bnf.nice.org.uk/drug/lamotrigine.html#sideEffects

Hello Diane,

Thank you for getting back to me, I really appreciate it.

I spoke to my doctor yesterday who suggested that I up my Citalopram to 20mg. This helped a bit yesterday but the same sensations are back today (every 10 mins or so but lasting less than 30 seconds).

I’ve only just moved onto 50mg of Lamotrigine and I will be moving up to 75 mg in a week or so. I’m hoping this helps too.

Thank you once again.

Maria
