Missing medication

Hi. My son seems to have a seizure within hours of missing his medication. He is 22 and knows the importance of always taking it however he has missed a couple times over the last two years. Each time has brought on a tonic clonic.Does this happen to anyone else? I wonder if his medicine dosage needs to be upped? I will contact his doctor but helps to know if others experience this. Thank you.

Hi, I’m 42 and have had epilepsy for 12yrs this year and I have learnt any change to the system can cause a seizure and for me that even includes a pain killer although I’m told there safe to take and don’t interfere with my medication and yet I always seizure and when I complained to my neurologist I was told any changes to the system can cause a seizure but I would tell your son’s doctor as everyone is different and it maybe he needs a higher dose to stop a tonic clonic. Good luck and I hope things get better.

Take care X

Thank you so much. Good info! Wishing you the best

If he still misses meds he obviously doesn't understand the importance of adherence that well..Yeah, missing meds, even one can cause seizures, particularly if you are on a monotherapy and that is the one med you miss.

Without knowing what medication your son is on I can't be more help. Other than to stress that if every time he misses his meds he has a TC, and he keeps missing meds then you need to find another way of getting it across to him that non adherence to his meds is strongly linked to seizures.

We don't take the things for fun.

Get him a dossett box if need be, so you can track when he takes his meds if he lives at home.

Hi Alpacca2884, I’m the mum of an 18 year old son who has very recently been diagnosed with generalised tonic clinic seizures that occur during sleep. He was prescribed Keppra and is now on a dose of 750mg, one to be taken in the morning and one at night. His Epilepsy nurse stressed to us both the importance of never missing his meds, even one dose, as this could lead to a seizure. She suggested setting a reminder on his phone so that he wouldn’t forget. He finds this very helpful.

Hello and thank you for the info. Sorry your son too has to go through this. Definitely not a good thing to miss medication! I agree.

Hi Alpaca,

The first time I missed my dosis I had a very bad day... ( I did it on purpose, so my mom didn’t have to buy pills often) that mischieve, got me to add an extra pill ( I was taking Carbamazepine only, but the doctor gave an extra pill Primidone) I learned not to do it again, but that help me to control my seizures for more than 30 years, a few years ago I had a very bad episode because of work stress + fam problems+ immigration process.. My doctor prescribe me four pills a day( carbamazepine)+ my regular primidone it was way too much for me, I couldn’t go to work or get up from bed, I talk to him and we agree to take 3 a day.. since then I don’t have any seizures since 2017..Bottom line tell your son Do not skip your meds! Is very important!! I know he is young, but if he carries his meds so he knows that he have to take it..it will help him to have a better day.
