After my son had his first awake seizure last November he’s been off work as he drives for a living. After many meetings he has now been medically discharged after 5 years in his job. He has a family to support so hopefully he can get another job locally or on the bus route.
can I ask people’s experience of managing to get another job? Did you disclose your condition ? Did this help?
I imagine that for a driving job you would have to disclose it for the insurance to be valid.I've never had the sort of job where it mattered either way whether I was epileptic or not, since my dream of flying harriers in the navy was scuppered when I was a kid, so I've never declared it until I have the job when I am then very open about it.
Hi.When I was diagnosed with epilepsy around 7 years ago I was working in a country club with no public transport. I bought an electric bike and cycled 10 miles each way until I got my licence back. Unfortunately I had it taken off me a year later so left that job and since then I have only applied for jobs that are easily accessible either by walking or cycling.
I never disclose my condition when applying for jobs but will tell them if I get an interview. I like to be honest about it and it doesn't seem to have affected my ability to get a job.

He could of done another role within the company but his base it’s 25 miles away from his home so he just couldn't stay as too far to commute and not all of it on a bus route.
He has applied for more local jobs one being a 2 minute walk away so we are keeping are fingers crossed for that one.
Can I ask have you applied for the free bus pass?
Hi.When he informs the DVLA about the seizures they will send him a letter stating he has had his license revoked because of the seizures and you then send a copy of that letter to your local bus company when applying for the free bus pass which lasts for 12 months.
Yeah he’s already done that with DVLA He’s been using the busses quite a lot so I will remind him to get it sorted as he says it’s complicated but thank you .
It's very straightforward. Just apply online and take a screenshot of the letter. Even I managed to do it so it must be easy.
Really sorry to hear about your son. It's easy to apply for a bus pass in my local area, I haven't got a letter from DVLA but a letter from my neurologist after an annual appointment and copy of my prescription is enough. My bus pass also gives me reduced/free local train and tram journeys. I can also recommend Disabled Persons Railcard for longer trips! Fingers crossed he gets the job!

Sorry to hear about your Son's situation. If you don't live on a route with public transport to a job the Access to Work scheme will help. Go to the Gov.uk website. I always disclosed my disability.
He did apply for that 2 months ago and said he was employed and gave his works details, but no he’s not should he inform them his employment status has changed ?
Yes. State that he's unemployed and unable to apply for a lot of jobs due to lack of public transport.
