Changes in my Mum

Hi, My mum has epilepsy and has had it since a young age. I've noticed over the last year some changes - I think its brain deterioration but I'm no doctor.

She struggles to speak to read, walk on her own due to balance, her shakes are awful! She doesn't eat properly and slowly develops new eating habits (wont have crust on her sandwiches then doesn't like bread).

She hardly leaves the house or interacts with anyone except those who live with her, and house work has become close to none. Holding a conversation with her is extremely hard and she doesn't have much to say and when she does she is unable to get her words out. Just over 12 months ago she argued with me when my birthday was (its been the same day for 23 years).

Has anyone experienced this? Is this from the Epilepsy, or from not keeping the brain active enough? or should i be looking into something else?

Thank you.

Hi there – this sounds tough for your mum and for you and you must be worried about her. Sometimes people can experience side effects of epilepsy medicines over time and this might explain some of the symptoms she is having. It’s also possible that she may be experiencing some depression which can happen with epilepsy. It could be worth speaking to your mum about talking to her epilepsy doctor to ask for a review of her epilepsy to get things checked out.

You’d be welcome to ring us at the Epilepsy Action Helpline if you think we can answer any more questions or you want to talk things through. Our number is 0808 800 5050 and its free to phone. We are open 8.30 – 8pm Monday to Thursday, 8.30am to 4.30pm Friday and 10am – 4pm Saturday.

Regards
