High Fever triggers seizures, why???

Dear all,

My boyfriend has been diagnosed epilepsy last year. He takes levetiracelam 250mg and lamotrigine 150mg every meal.

Last year he got 4-5 seizures in total, because of the pressure.

HOWEVER, this year he had seizures every month. Every time, he had a fever prior to the seizure. Basically, he wears much more than others, and I don’t think the fever is normal, because hospital did all the tests, results are normal. He got fevers too frequently this year. When the temperature rises to 38degree, seizure must happen, nothing can stop it.

During these 4 days he had three seizures in total, one just happened this morning. GP cannot tell the reason, just recommend to take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen. He took three days already, just during sleeping he didn’t take, so seizure happened this morning. Neurologist just tell to increase the dose.

Dear all, if you have similar situation, please help me. I’m really frustrated now, seems like I did everything but getting worse.

Thank you very much!

Hi

Thanks for your message. It sounds like it may be a good idea for your boyfriend to ask his neurologist for a full review of his medicines to make sure that he is getting the right treatment and care for his epilepsy.

It can sometimes take a little while to find the right doses of the right medicines to bring someone’s seizures under control. I’m not sure how much levetiracetam your boyfriend is taking per day, but he may still be on a relatively low dose. And its normal to start on a low dose and increase this gradually to give the body time to adjust to the medicine.

I’m wondering if your boyfriend has always had regular fevers or if this is something new? Although rare, fever is a possible side-effect of lamotrigine (bnf.nice.org.uk/drug/lamotr.... And increased risk of infections (which can cause fevers) is a possible side-effect of levetiracetam (bnf.nice.org.uk/drug/leveti.... If he has been having more fevers than usual since starting his epilepsy medicines, it may be a good idea for him raise this with his neurologist. If his neurologist thinks that his epilepsy medicines may be contributing to his fevers, there are lots of other epilepsy medicines available that may suit him better.
