I’ve just got found out that I am pregnant. I’m going to see my gp in a couple of weeks as it’s still very early days so I understand miscarriage rate is high. Will he refer me to I see a midwife or obstetrician? I’ve been doing some google research and am confused.
Thank you for your help

Congratulations! Do you take medication for Epilepsy? If you do, you need to see your GP as soon as possible as lots of Epilepsy medications increase the risk of birth defects in children when the mother takes them during pregnancy. This risk might be reduced by you changing to a different anti-epilepsy drug (AED) or lowering your dose and also taking a high dose of folic acid which your doctor can prescribe to you.
Miscarriages are most likely to happen at the beginning of a pregnancy, but you still have a very high chance of not miscarrying, so I would urge you to see a GP as soon as possible.
You should be referred to a midwife to do all the usual pregnancy checks and an obstetrician to talk to you about your Epilepsy and how they will manage your pregnancy bearing it in mind. You might also be referred to your neurologist to talk to them about being pregnant with Epilepsy. You actually don’t need to be referred to a midwife. If you ring your GP practice and tell them you need a booking in appointment with a midwife, they will arrange this for you. In different places they will be at the GP practice, at the local Children’s Centre or at the hospital.
I take lamictal so the epilepsy medication is ok, just the dosage might need tweaking.
I called my doctors and the receptionist said you self refer to a midwife but it’s good to see your go and have it in the system. I might call again next week and speak to someone else and see what they say.
Thank you for clarifying the midwife and obstetrician.... I was muddle currently have a neurologist and am booked for an annual appointment in a couple of months.
Great to hear you’ve got it all sorted! It’s such an exciting time. I am currently planning to start trying for a second some time this year and am already excited!
Xx
