has anyone thought or tried this and how much does it cost in Uk?
freezing eggs: has anyone thought or tried... - Endometriosis UK
freezing eggs
I’ve not done it as going through fertility treatment currently. Wish I had when I was younger.
The costs are about £4000 for a single cycle. Bear in mind many with endo get fewer eggs per cycle than the average person. Multicycle packages eg 3 cycles for egg freezing usually around £7-8k. There would be annual storage fee of about £300-400 after that.
egg freezing is definitely a good idea! You would probably need to do a few rounds depending on your age and where you have endo! I believe you’ll want 15-20 eggs frozen to be able to get to blastocyst stage. As the attrition rate can be high! (It’s different for everyone and no one knows how well it’ll go until you try!)
For example I have done 3 rounds;
First round only 1 of 6 eggs fertilised
Second round 0 of 13 eggs fertilised
Third round 11 of 18 eggs fertilised
Total of 7 blastocysts across the three cycles.
I am 36 with ovarian endo and Endo on pouch of Douglas. Xx
hey Sophhh here's the info I've collected based on my interactions with fertility clinics and trying things myself
- freezing eggs after the age of 35 is often a waste of money because the quality of the eggs rapidly declines and even for ivf multiple cycles are needed. Read up about the attrition rate . There is no way to assess egg quality other than through fertilising the eggs apparently. This is why most responsible clinics advise against freezing eggs after 35 but rather suggest freezing embryos (obviously it is not an option for everyone) or suggest having many cycles to have a good number of frozen eggs.
- one cycle can cost between £3500 - 4500 depending on the country you are doing it. Greece and Spain can be a bit cheaper.
- if you do not like the stim meds you can try freezing eggs through natural cycle - google natural or mild ivf - there are clinics in London which do that - but you will need way more cycles as only 1-2 eggs are produce each time and it's expensive. See above re. attrition rate.
- people with endo can be poor responders to stim meds. In this case you end up injecting a lot of drugs but would only get 1-2 eggs per cycle. So sometimes mild ivf protocols are better. There are experimental treatments such as ovarian prp (not done in the UK as still considered unproven but done in e.g. Spain and Greece). This is to improve circulation in the ovaries. They have some promising results reported.
- acupuncture done for about 2-3 months before 2-3 times a week seems to help too.
Everything is individual and the above is not medical advice (I am not a doctor)
