Ovulating whilst on pill

Sorry, I know I posted the other day about pain, but I just went to my gynaecologist and discovered my pain was an ovarian cyst. At least I have an answer is all I an say. However, my doc was shocked to see that I was still ovulating, very thick endometrial lining etc despite being on the pill for 3 months. I didn't want to ask, but does that mean I haven't been protected in terms of contraception for 3 months?

Little bit stressed...

Great that you have an answer at least and things are moving forward.

The pill works in more than one way, not only by preventing ovulation, and a thickened endometrial lining could maybe be caused by other things so I'm not sure anyone can say? If you haven't missed any pills, it sounds like it would be a good idea to tell your GP what was said and ask about other options -- the injection, a different pill, coil, etc? You could ask about the progesterone-only pill if you're not already on it. And use condoms in the meanwhile if you're worried.

I’m going back to the gynaecologist in a month in the hope that the cyst will have reduced and discuss other pill options if my body hasn’t started to respond to the pill.. I’m wlready on the progesterone only pill and have tried all other forms other than the coil, which haven’t worked on me, so so annoying. So just gonna have to sit tight for a month and see what happens

Argh, how frustrating. Fingers crossed that the cyst goes away! xx

Ahh I can understand your worry. Ovarian cysts and endometriosis can both produce abnormal levels of oestrogen - they produce their own which could counteract the pill thus yes ovulation can occur. It may mean you haven't been protected but as wanwood says it protects in different ways; preventing ovulation and preventing implantation, so it may be the latter still works.

Have a chat to your GP as you may need to discuss different pills / hormones. It may also be an idea to discuss next steps for your cyst too.

xx

Thanks for this. I’m just gonna have to be extra careful while I wait for a follow up with the gynae to discuss next steps. He doesn’t want to operate on me so soon after my previous laparoscopy, neither do I really. So fingers crossed the cyst reduces on its own..
