Chronic dislocation of atlanto-axial joint

Thoughts please.

I have a diagnosis of joint hypermobility syndrome along with Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

In 2015 following pain, headaches, arm weakness, pins and needles etc I was diagnosed with a ‘chronic dislocation’ of the atlanto-axial joint via an upright MRI at Medserena in London. Other language also used in the summary was: ‘These appearances are those of a subluxed right facet of the atlanto-axial joint, more in keeping with a previous traumatic episode than with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome‘ (I had a sledging accident years previously fracturing my spine in three places ).

Following this diagnosis I paid privately and saw an extremely rude and dismissive consultant who would not even entertain the diagnosis and had not read the letter or reviewed the scan report prior to the consultation. Because he had previously carried out X-rays of my neck which he said were fine, it felt like he was offended having his opinion challenged.

Anyway, following that I went about other ways to help me including many chiropractic appointments.

My question some 4 years later still suffering severe symptoms is, should I take the diagnosis more seriously and seek another opinion?

I recently read a case of a lady with similar diagnosis who was in a neck brace for several hours a day with advice not to make any sudden movements until surgery could be performed to stabilise the area.

The fact that I’m still here with similar symptoms makes me think it may not be serious enough to worry about?

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you in advance 😊

Hello Brdlyjan1 Although it is a old injury you are still suffering from it might just be an idea to see a Therapist for Sport Injuries who treats people with Hypermobility or if you like a Rheumatologist. You said you suffer from chronic dislocation of the Atlanto

Axial Joint.Any chronic dislocation would need some kind of support.Well ,I am not a Doctor ,but some kind of Neck Support would perhaps be advisable. But please

consult a well searched out Specialist . Best Wishes for you

Hi Kellyblue,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have sought out many opinions from physios, osteopaths etc. The vast majority will not treat me after reading the report. There is one chiropractor two hours from my home who I see every few months which gives me temporary relief. I am considering a different neurosurgeon to the one I saw initially to review the scan results and advise appropriately. Thanks again

Thanks 2flower. I have had this procedure many times at Newport Chiropractic in Shropshire. Apparently some people only need it done once, but for me it is only ever temporary. It definitely feels better afterwards but I am so tired when it has been done and it's a 2 hour drive each way. I always worry that I may be doing more harm than good. Thanks again.
