hi, when just waking in the early morning I often hear sounds that are familiar to me like a Radio being on for a minute or knocking on the door, I am definately imagining the sounds as only I hear them, I have got used to them now but still they are annoying. Does anyone else have this please??

That happens to me too Hannalaura. It's usually the doorbell or the telephone though in my case. Don't know what causes it, but if we both experience this, is it probably fairly common.

I think this is called Hypnagogia - it's something to do with the transition between sleep and waking and can happen when you're falling asleep too. A nurse friend told me it is common.

My friend who has M.E. wakes up in the night with sounds and it is very upsetting for her and it sounds as if someone is in her home. She has a break-in once and so it really worries her. Good to hear it has a name!!

In the early stages of my ME, I used to hear what souded a cross between a lawn mower and and a car engine running. Also, when very tired like I am now, I hear like what has been called high pitch news bells. This is not all the time, but when I am feeling particularly weak and tired.

Most people, if they have been in a night club where there has been very loud music, then later when they get home, they can hear this high pitched sound for a while. With ME Sufferers, it is quite common. People who suffer tinitus, which is a similar condition, do not get any respite from it and usually it is a continuous thing. At least we do get a break from it.

London underground runs through my head - ear to ear on occasions and I wake up to knocking or drumming at the most bizarre times!
