eGFR drop from 70-38% in 2 years - is that a lot or kind of normal?

That is quite a sharp drop , mine dropped on average 5 - 7 % per year . Have they got you to start talking to a dietician yet , If not ask to speak to one to start eliminating foods that are showing high in your counts. Reduce your salts . Monitor your blood pressure , as controlled bp can help reduce the pace of decline along with stricter diets.

There isn't really a normal in this, as everyone is different. It sounds as though you would benefit from a chat with your doctor to see what is going on, and also, as pluto94 says, to refer you to a dietician. Best wishes to you xx

I don't think that's normal the pluto94&GrannyChris are rite as the dietitian goes&blood pressure monitoring/treatment is also good idea (this will prolong kidney function). Are you having a dipstick done yet to test for protein in your urine? and have you got a renal consultant? think you might need a referral. Good luckxx

A good diet is not easy to arrange; I tried to get advice from both the GP and the phrenologist, and was told "You can eat almost anything as long as you make sure there is no salt used in the preparation of the food, and that you have a healthy diet", but I *think* the amount of protein I eat affects me more than most things; I read a book recently (bought for me by my kind son) which indicated that a sensible amount of protein to have each day is about 50 Grams (The book quoted that most Americans tend to have twice that amount daily). There is also, with me, the question of "How much liquid intake is right?" Too much makes the kidneys overwork, too little is just as bad.. I *think* maybe about 2 litres/day is a good guide.

The trouble with all this is that we are all individuals, and possibly no one rule applies to us all; I have come to the conclusion that I need to refine my diet by trial and error - and it is not always an easy thing to do. At the moment, even though I am trying all the sensible things, my creatinine level is on the up, and Gfr is coming down even though I am doing my best... but I am still to have tests (a CT scan this week) to see if there is still a blockage from the kidney to the bladder...

Whatever happens, good luck...

Thank you so much for taking time to reply. I am in the process of having scans and tests done. I also have auto-immune pancreatitis which is very rare - I'm one of 100 in the world. They were wondering if I have lupus, but apparently not. Now the Dr thinks it's another mystery illness - well at least cause with the kidneys.

I'll ask to see a dietician and have to wait for the results of bloods and a CT scan I had done last week. I was just thinking the drop seems quite significant in the time, so am a bit worried.

My blood pressure is ok - within normal range. I haven't had to do a dip stick yet - maybe they will next time? I don't know much about a kidney diet - will ask next time I seer the neph.

Thank you again for all your replies!!

Some people initially test negative for lupus but then go on to develop it. I am not saying that it is lupus but doctors need to keep an open mind and treat according to the symptoms.

Have a look at the lupus community and see if there are any great similarities.

Thank you! I will take a look on the Lupus site. I've got to see the neph on Thursday. I saw my GP today and I'm now down another 2% - so 36% now. My creatinine is gradually going up - 146 - it's nothing in the scheme of what I've heard in others, but it's rising.

Will see what the Dr says on Thursday. I'm expecting a kidney biopsy possibly.

Thanks for your help and support!

Dee
