Hello. I haven't posted for quite a while but I read the discussions everyday. I wondered if anyone has experience with, or knowledge about, NAC (L-Acetyl-N-Cysteine). It seems to be a legitimate supplement--the NIH research reports are very positive about its benefits and don't really find any bad side effects. I want to take it for my emphysema, which is currently well controlled, but I can't find much info on how it effects the kidneys.

Info about NAC?
Hi there,
I am unfamiliar with NAC (L-Acetyl-N-Cysteine). However, whether they are supplements, OTC's (Over-the-counter medications) or prescribed medications, it is advisable to get professional medical advice. This is because your doctors know your medical history and, medications and are best placed to advise about interactions or side effects. Many supplements are not considered safe if you have CKD, so it is best to get your doctors' advice.
Hope this helps.

HI G3,
I like to look up information on different medications and this is what I found. I always check with your medical provider before taking any supplement

Thank you for your research, Bassetmommer. Those studies imply that NAC has no effect on the kidneys. But I don't think we can jump to that conclusion because the studies only investigated one effect of NAC in one specific situation. I will ask my nephro at our next appointment.
Unfortunately, even the best studies don’t take individuals into account. Tumeric is supposed to be great for inflammation. I took half a dose for 3 days and went into the worst flare I’ve ever experienced. Apparently just another thing I’m intolerant to. So much for it helping inflammation for me.
That being said, I’ve used NAC for 4 years now. I was on it before I found out I had kidney disease and both my holistic kidney doctor, mainstream nephrologist and DO all said fine for me. But, as you are doing and everyone else has said, it’s wise to discuss with your nephrologist.
