New Here creatinine - 1.31

I just found this board. Had my usual blood work and creatinine was 1.31. Bun was high at 29. Urinalysis showed nothing: protein, blood, microalbumin 55. CBC okay

I'm a 71 year old type 2 diabetic male. Well controlled, BP running 120/70 or lower.

Creatinine has fluctuated over the years from 1.2 January 2013 to a high of 1.41 July 2017, down to 1.26 5/18, 1.11 10/18. After my high of 1.41 my old internist suggested i drink water before my fasting test. I did that and it seemed to lower, but last time I drank water and it was 1.31.

So I'm concerned but not in a panic. Will be seeing my internist Wednesday to see what he says, but I'm looking for advice on any other tests I might want to ask for.

Any help is appreciated.

Ed

Keep us posted on results of your follow-up visit. Your internist should be able to put all the results together and diagnose you.

I am a male 78 years old and diagnosed at CKD 3b, 3 years ago and put on a renal diet appropriate for me. So far the progression has slowed down.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep the group posted. I'm not overly concerned because my old internist said createnine can go up and down, and so far I don't see anything else. I also have the name of a recommended nephrolgist if needed.

Thanks again.

Did your Doctor schedule you for another eGFR test to see if this was a one time thing or is a pattern? Were your sodium, potassium and or phosphorus levels ok? Maybe discuss with your Doctor your concerns.

All my potassium sodium phosphorus sodium bicarbonate protein levels are normal.

Crearinine has been fluctuating between 1.75 to 2.09 from December 19 till May 20.

Latest is 1.90.

Doctor has advised me to take next blood test in 1st week of June

Even calcium magnesium and chloride are normal.

Doctor feels that it may be result of aging.

So diet control and monitor

Yes there is some decline in functions as one ages. Yes it is best to monitor results of your eGFR and related tests.

Hi,

I just thought I'd say I have my visit with my internist today. I believe I said a complete urinalysis was done and nothing was found. He felt I was a very, very mild CKD with stage 3A. His recommendation is that we monitor it. So I'll see what happens in 6 months.

I did recall and told him what my previous internist said when a nurse at the VA hospital where I go once a year was very concerned about an A1C of 7.2.

He said he had good news and bad news. The good news was that a 7.2 is fine for a man 70. The bad news was that's because you're not looking at as long a life span. I agree with that. Something at 40 or 50 that will impact you in 20 or 30 years is critical. On the other hand, if something will impact me in 30 years when I'm 70....

Anyway, thanks to everyone.

Hi Ed. I am 69, male. Single kidney. Stage 3b, although last test put me at 3a. egfr, creatinine will not remain constant. There is always fluctuation. But not huge differences. I have learned not to panic about one test. It seems, for me, each time I get one test that alarms me (but not the doctor), the next is lower. But you mentioned fasting. My doctor does fasting blood work to check my cholesterol, etc., but always instructs me to ignore the egfr, creatinine, bun, etc. Then 2 days later he does a random test of only my kidney. This test is without fasting. These are the numbers that we track for condition of the kidney. There is always a significant difference between my fasting vs non fasting results. The non fasting are always better. My BUN level ranges between 21 up to 30. I am instructed to not pay too much attention to the BUN, but instead to monitor the bun/creatinine ratio. This is a better indicator of kidney function. My creatinine changes, but remains between 1.7 up to 1.9. Recently (past 4 months) it has improved. It went to 1.4. Last test 1.22. But my doctor said don't panic if it goes back to the higher level. It will not remain constant.

Thanks so much for your kind answer. My old internist did suggest that I drink water before the fasting test, but didn't suggest not fasting. When I visit Wednesday, I'm pretty sure he'll want a repeat test but I'll make sure it doesn't have to be fasting.

Thanks again,

Ed

You should ask your doctor to run a renal panel and a complete urinalysis. Creatinine alone does not show whether you have kidney disease or not. There is a lot more that needs to be looked at in your blood and urine to tell if anything is going on or not. And then you need to see if there is a trend over time. One bad test results does not show that you have CKD.

Don't forget too, creatinine does rise as we age. My mother-in-law has a creatinine of 2.1, but has no other issues with her blood work

Take care.

exactly WYOAnne. Good post.

Thanks so much for your answer. My internist did run a complete urinalysis w/reflex to culture. Everything in that was normal. No protein, nitrate, microalbumin, etc.

And thanks for telling me about your mother-in-law. I'm not overly concerned, but I don't want to be complacent, either.

Thanks again,

Ed

was happy to see your comments as I am 72 year old male with no other health issue except creatinine which is at 1.90. I am in perfect health.Do you really think that based only on creatinine you can not decide on CKD. Is it your personal view or views of a nephrologist?

Not what you're looking for?
