As I was searching for kidney information online I came across this very interesting (and encouraging) article from Canadian Medical Association Journal regarding kidney aging vs. kidney disease and thought it might be helpful to share here.

Found Interesting Article
Hi there,
Thanks for sharing this interesting and thought-provoking article. I'll read it through more thoroughly later.
When it comes to research studies I like to go to the original source if possible to check the facts. Even if you are not very academic, they always give a synopsis in the form of an abstract at the beginning of the paper. A useful source to begin searching in Google Scholar.
We would be interested in any interesting information relating to CKD that you all may have accessed. Do share with us all so we can all learn.
Best wishes,

The problem I have with the article is that I am afraid many people, when told this is normal aging of the kidney, will not do the many things we can do to improve kidney health. It is not easy to inform yourself and to improve your diet by not eating some of the things that you really like. Yet, those are sometimes the very things that make your kidney function worse. I believe that there needs to be overall education of everyone of what we can do to preserve our kidneys.
Thank you for sharing this. I agree with the authors that hearing CKD tends to put people in panic mode based on our own recent experience, but I agree with lowraind's point that this label might get people's attention more than saying "kidney ageing".
Weird that the whole point of the article is kidney age versus CKD stages, but they don't give a GFR/Age chart or table for reference. Here is the only clue I read: "For example, a doctor would tell their patient that their kidney age is 68 to 77 years, instead of diagnosing CKD stage 3A."
Most of us are aware of kidney ageing and are sensible with the reality of that. What I found was at stage 3 ckd was the terrible feeling of being unwell and when I seriously took onboard the diet suggested the feeling of being well and energy levels returning was astounding. The monitoring gives confidence and for those whose condition may deteriorate a safety net. The danger of downgrading the condition may leave some of us less likely to take sensible care about looking after ageing kidneys.... (only a personal opinion of course) The advice given by experts of course should include all anomalies.
thank you for that very interesting article. I have CKD Stage 3A and constantly worry about what I should be eating, so felt better for reading this article as I am 73 years of age.
You are welcome ☺️
It helped me to feel less anxious as well. I too have stage 3A and am 70...so hopefully for us it is just a part of the aging process. There are so many changes that takes place in our bodies as we age...and it's not very pleasant, but I thank God for the health I DO have and for all the problems I DON'T have!! I am trying not to obsess about it and give so my fears to the Lord Jesus...He had been so good to me throughout many health problems and really He is all we can rely on because doctors and medicine, though a blessing, can do only do so much.
I'm trying to cut way back on sodium, potassium and phosphorus as much as possible, although I still eat yogurt for my low bone density...you have to balance everything out for all your body needs, which is more complicated as we get older. 😯
I hope your kidneys remain stable. Try to find goodness And joy and blessings in the little things of life...that will ease your anxiety and is good for your health too!
God bless you! ❤️
thank you for your kind words and inspiration. I too am trying to cut back on sodium, potassium and phosphorus. I used to love bananas and avocado but have cut them out completely now hoping my kidney function will improve.
God Bless you too.
