Uk waiting list.

Hey,

Just a quick question, I had a failed kidney transplant a few weeks ago from my dad, the kidney didn't even last a day so now I'm back on dialysis. I had three major surgeries and all though physically fine now, my mind is trashed. I have to go on the waiting list now and I'm just wondering how long did people wait until they received a cadavaer kidney? Although getting a kidney is the end goal, I don't think I could go through that ordeal again anytime soon.

Thanks in advance

Hi

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. The same happened to me, although mine was a cadaver. I waited 19 years for it. Drs pumped every drug possible into me to save It, but it just never worked properly and was removed after 3 months, which I spent in hospital. I decided never again and took myself off the list. That was 10 years ago and I have never regretted my decision to not have another transplant. I dialyse at home nocturnally and am better than I've ever been. It suits me. I go to work still and enjoy life.

In reply to your question; you might wait weeks, months or years. There is no guarantee with anything. So enjoy life. I went on the list at 17, was dialysing at 20 and I'm now 46. Transplants just aren't an option for me now. Good luck.

Hi

Sorry to hear about your situation.. I can understand completely that your 'mind is trashed'......kidney failure/dialysis/major opps all take it out of us and it's good to have time in between to recover.. ...it often seems that there is just one thing after another and sometimes I just feel like shouting 'leave me alone!'

I find there are low days followed by days where I feel good....the trick is remembering I find that the bad feelings will pass...

I've been on the transplant list now for 6 months and I hear that the average wait time in the UK is 3 years.....although it can be sooner or much later.....

The good news is that the 'opt out' system used in Wales and Scotland is now being discussed in parliament so this should improve things here in England if it goes through.. ...

Wishing you a peaceful few weeks!

Margaret

I know it's 6 years at least in the USA. I went on list in June but am thinking of going off. I'm weighing all you have to go thru and since I don't anyone who's had one I have no firsthand knowledge. Just not sure which one is worse as I've heard horror stories about both. Any input would be appreciated! Prayers for all, God can do anything.

Yes in the uk they say average 3 years but i know some people only waited 3 weeks, 18 months & one 10 years! its best match at the end of the day my son knew someone who had a transplant of their mum didnt last long but the cadaver one was still going strong 4 years later she was leading a great "normal" life x
