Hi.

I take Ramipril tablets for high blood pressure, I also have Kidney disease, You need to ask your dad if he can get a print out of his blood tests results, that will show the extent of his kidney disease, ie, my GFR is 38 which is classed as stage 3 kidney disease. I'm sure someone else on this site with more knowledge can explain it better than me.

I am also on Ramipril for high blood pressure and GP told Ramipril is probably what caused my stage 3 CKD.

You can't win - everything has a side effect.

I do get copies of my blood tests so I can also monitor results myself.

Try not to worry. I'm exactly the same, early signs of CKD. Stage 3a. also on Ramipil (it helps to control blood /pressure) I've Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, was around same weight, but now lost 3st. Loosing weight helps B/pressure which in turn helps CKD.

I've been told just carry on as normal. This site is really good as it gives you information on the 5 stages 1-2-3a/3b-4-5. It can't be reversed but it can be controlled

It's great that your interested in helping your dad.

I am 65 n gfr about 33. Good blood pressure. My specialist advise me to eat normally not too much potassium n phosphorus content. Exercise.

yes-watch the foods that contain potassium and phosphorus. had to go on line to find which foods are high in these. never on contents labels of food. broccoli and chicken-which I thought were fine- are high in these. down to turkey, asparagus, carrots and string beans-cauliflower, too. I eat meat loaf- normal meat loaf contains more carbs than protein. keep protein down near 440g per day. surprising how many foods contain protein- not just beans, meat and eggs. other safe veggies are not safe for me, as I am prone to kidney stones-with no symptoms till stone has grown too large to pass. for stones-no spinach, sweet potatoes, nut, beans and a list of foods you wouldn't believe. went to nutritionist-diet for disease and to avoid stones-conflict. drink a gallon of water per day. SORRY- MEANT TO SAY 40g OF PROTEIN PER DAY DAY-NOT 440- WHICH IS OUTLANDISH. DRINK 60 OZ WATER PER DAY-HELPS FILTER TOXINS IN KIDNEY AND OTHER ORGANS.

I'm stage 4. I'm on bp med also, not that one tho. Was concerned it would make my kidneys worse. Refused to take it for a long time but my husband and Doctor ganged up on me. Bp is good now but haven't had lab dice I started taking it. Am praying it doesn't lower my GFR or I could be looking at dialysis. I just remember, God can do anything!! Prayers for you and your dad

WHEN WE AGE, OUR PARTS GET WORN OUT-LIKE A MACHINE. I AM 78 AND HAVE KIDNEY DISEASE STAGE 3- WAS STAGE 2 FOR MANY YEARS UNKNOWN TO ME. YES, HE HAS TO STOP SMOKING-OR CUT BACK GREATLY. I STOPPED-AM USING A DAILY E CIG-MAKE IT LAST 4 DAYS. HELPS. NICOTINE CONSTRICTS BLOOD VESSELS TO KIDNEY. DIET FOR DISEASE IS DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW, AFTER YEARS OF EATING WHATEVER WE WANTED. ALL WE CAN DUE IS TRY TO CONTROL PROGRESSION. DRINK ABOUT 64 OUNCES OF WATER PER DAY- HELPS KIDNEY DILUTE AND PASS TOXINS. ALSO KEEP PROTEINN INTAKE TO A MINIMUM- 40g PER DAY. DIFFICULT-AMAZING HOW MANY FOODS, BESIDES MEAT CONTAIN PROTEIN.GENERAL DOCTORS DON'T REALLY KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE-ATTRIBUTE IT TO AGING. DIFFICULT TO GET A SPECIALIST TO SEE YOU, UNTIL YOU AT POINT OF NO RETURN. IS DIET AND WATER INTAKE GOING TO REALLY HELP-DON'T KNOW, WILL TRY- TRUSTING GOD. OUR ONLY ANSWER AND HOPE. GOD BLESS. TRY TO TALK TO DAD'S DOCTOR IF YOU CAN, TO GET SOME INFO. YES, IT IS TERRIFYING

OH, BY THE WAY, I DO NOT HAVE HIGH BP, DIABETES OR ANY OTHER DISEASE THAT CAUSES KIDNEY PROBLEMS. WAS ON PRILOSEC FOR ACID REFLUX- LAWSUIT PENDING AS IT WAS FOUND TO CAUSE KIDNEY DISEASE. THOUGHT ALL THESE MEDS WE ARE TAKING, HAD BEEN THOROUGHLY TESTED TO SEE IF THEY WORK WITHOUT DANGEROUSE SIDE EFFECTS. TO CURE ONE THING, WE ARE DOOMED TO GET ANOTHER.

I had the same trouble with GP - diagnosed but undisclosed CKD for 7 years. I too get copies of my bloods after every test so I can see for myself what is going on. If my doctor lied to me once (said I'd only had it 2 years) what's to say he won't lie to me again?

Ps I'd love to know what you eat on a typical day. I wish I could go vegan.

my dad is constantly on my mind and yes i am full of worry as everytime i ask him what they've said he just doesn't seem to know himself or understand! or least hes acting this way!..... all i know is he was told about 3-4 years ago he had the very first signs of kidney failure and i know hes onramipril (think this is for the bloodpressure or bloodpressure and kidneys not too sure) but he has said that apparently the doctors have said to him they have it under control????? pretty sure from research on kidney failure you cant reverse this though?? will he die from this?? how long would he have left till hed need a transplant at the worst stage if he has had this for 3-4 years now already?

LAST TIME I WENT TO MY DOCTOR, MY SON CAME WITH ME. MY STRESS AND ANXIETY ON THIS CAUSED ME TO GET CONFUSED, NOT UNDERSTAND ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS---AND FORGETTING WHAT I WAS TOLD. SON IS HELPING ME NOW- HAVE CALMED DOWN-A BIT. NO HIGH BP, DIABETES-ACTUALLY THOUGHT I WAS HEALTHY FOR MY AGE-78, UNTIL I GOT E-COLI-- SEEMS I HAD KIDNEY STONES- NOT PASSING AND NO SYMPTOMS--STONES NOT PASSING, BUT ACCUMULATING AND STARTED TO DAMAGE KIDNEY FUNCTION. SEEMS I HAD BEEN STAGE 2- STONES CAUSED ME TO GO TO 3---AFTER STONES REMOVED, BACK TO 2. NOW AGAIN, STAGE 3---STONES AGAIN????? ONLY WAY THEY WERE FOUND WAS XRAY FOR OTHER ISSUE. GO TO DOC WITH YOUR DAD-LIST OF QUESTIONS-WRITE DOWN ANSWERS. DOCS DONT TELL US WHEN STAGE 2- ATTRIBUTE IT TO AGING- TILL IT IS LATE IN THE GAME. PRAY- TRUSTING GOD- OUR ONLY ANSWER TO ALL. GOD BLESS

You'd be better off having a read through the NKF Medical info pages. Which explain the stages of CKD,

kidney.org.uk/help-and-info...

kidney.org.uk/help-and-info...

Both smoking and obesity are bad for the kidneys. There's no cure for kidney failure, only a selection of treatments. Generally people don't die from kidney failure but from the side effects it has on the heart, and build up of toxins (in acute cases)

Ramipril is an ace inhibitor (one of many that drugs used to treat high blood pressure.

drugs.com/ramipril.html

Possibly his best non invasive treatment would be to loose weight and quit smoking and ensure he eats a varied diet, with reduced processed foods. Swimming is an excellent 5 star exercise.

He may be in denial, about it. Listen to him, talk to him and keep yourself informed. He sounds like a typical 'bloke' who doesn't want to open up :)

Good luck

If it was told early signs of kidney failure you are lucky to have the information early ,

i discovered when it came to stage 3 , you must not take more than 40 grams of protein , also invariably eat an apple a day , this i practiced and my gfr shot up my 9 ml in one month .

TRy to depend on vegi diets ,do some excercises every day , at least 30 mts, Always have positive thinking , do help some body everyday , and be happy with that.

whats your gfr level now ? age and gender ?

wish u good health

If you try to do any decent amount of exercise while only consuming 40gms of protein a day, you'll suffer terrible muscle wasting, which is what's happening to me. Have gotten waaay too thin following the renal diet and people ask me if I'm sick. Am at Stage 3a, diagnosed a year and a half ago. Age 60. Have had two kidney stones in the past and a small one is still in my right kidney.
