Hi everyone, just back from nephrologist, my husband Gfr was 29 in October last year and has now picked up to 31 :-) his creatinine was 236 now 224. Can you please assist by giving me more advice on how to improve these readings,

Hey that is great news. He is probably doing all this but just in case my advice would be cut out salt as much as possible. Keep well hydrated by drinking still water. Don't eat processed meat (which if you look at the labels is normally is loaded with salt) Cut down on coffee, beer, colas and in my opinion any carbonated drinks. I have also stopped eating read meat. Try to maintain a healthy blood pressure and weight and do some moderate exercise if he can. I also eat a lot of blueberries and start the morning with a glass of good quality cranberry juice.  I am sure that my changing my diet when I was diagnosed a year ago this month has helped me maintain the kidney function that I have left and actually improved it slightly.

Just keep doing what you are doing a good healthy diet keep hydrated cut out the salt keep a healthy weight all the things that we should all do really thats the best chance he can give himself unless he has been told otherwise the gfr & creatine can alter day to day so long as its pretty stable thats good you can stay around the same figure for many years x

Hi there its nice to hear good news.  I think you are probably doing the right things and no need to go overboard with diet. All things in moderation is a good rule advised by my husbands nephrologist and my husband has gone from gfr 27 to 37 in 6 months. We were told he can stay in the 30s for many years so getting on with life. Many people have suggested ruling out red meat and some no meat at all. We all need protein and this is not always a good idea.... we go back to moderation. It helps if blood pressure, weight and activity are maintained at near normal levels and anti-inflammatory drugs, ibuprofen etc are avoided. Enjoy your good news, try not to be over-concerned and enjoy a good life.  Love Belle x

Wow that's such great news. We were told that too much of exercise is not good as our body creates protein build up during training and no go for weight training..is this true?  I am really happy for your hubby and wish him the very best.

Hi there. I am sorry I am no expert on weight training although my husband does have dumb bells and exercises his arms at times. We also had a couple of dogs belonging to neighbours and would look after them at holiday times or if neighbours were away from home for any length of time and my husband enjoyed walking them. Sadly we have almost run out of dogs due to their old age no longer with us.....At present he does not walk very much except on holiday but still enjoys gardening and we have a dance when we are on holiday, strictly ballroom given up jiving. All in all being sensible most but not all of the time. ( it was funny but I said I was not amused seeing him jumping up and down in the brown garden bin to make more room)  We are hoping to have our usual May trip to Spain where we meet up with friends who live there and some of our American relatives spend a few days there also....On holiday our nephrologist accepts some sinning, ha ha...so there is a 3 week gap before further blood tests to get back on track and so far it has worked well. Long may it continue....Best wishes to you both, life can still be good, keep smiling. Love Belle x
