Renal csyst.

I just received the results of my ultrasound back and saw that I had a Peripelvic csyst.  Has anyone had experience with this?  Also, could that affect GFR?   I am currently at 32 and falling!  The only other reason I can think of is that I was on a low carb diet and eating mostly protein for 6 months.  I appreciate your thoughts!

I am not a medical professional. However, the diet you've been on seems unbalanced compared to what is usually recommended these days. Please check with your primary care doctor or a renal nutritionist to get you on the right path. When I was first diagnosed with CKD, I also consulted a renal nutritionist. There is also info on the Internet about diet and menu planning.

Hi there.... 5 months ago my husband had an ultrasound and a hard lesion was found on one of his kidneys.  Radiologist thinks it is probably a cyst but decided to leave it for 6 months and check again with a second ultrasound. My husbands GFR ranges between 27 and 37, his last test was 36..  His nephrologist says it will not interfere with his GFR results.  He is to see the nephrologist next Friday 1st. April following the normal blood and urine tests to-morrow Tuesday. He currently takes sodium bi-carbonate capsules 2 caps 3 times a day to keep his system alkaline and advised to drink more water than he did before the CKD diagnosis. Regarding diet he follows the nephrologists advice.... all things in moderation.....but be sure following a steak dinner, or any red meat....a full glass of water.....His GFR was 27 when we first saw the nephrologist in August and since following these simple rules it has never been in the 20s, and the lowest reading has been 33... The nephrologist is optimistic that my husbands kidney function could rise to the mid-forties, but even if this does not happen his kidneys should not fail for another 10 years or more.....Hope you find this information helpful, try not to worry and enjoy life especially if there are not too many symptoms.....Good luck.                                  Love Belle x

Belle, you are a godsend!  Thank you so much for the information.  I don't go back to my nephrologist for another 6 weeks so I was worried about what to do in the meantime.  Your husband's experience gives me hope!

You are so welcome my friend. I have been there just like you worried to death trying not to say anything to upset family or my husband... now quietly confident....I am surprised your nephrologist has not put you on sodium bi-carb. capsules they really do help. Have a good relationship with the nephrologist, very lucky there and he is never gloom and doom.   Saw our GP this morning for more blood and urine tests, see the neph. Friday.  Our GP had bumped into the neph. and he actually thanked him for sending my husband to him and confirmed GFR in the 30s is OK...don't need to think about transplant or dialysis until it goes down to  9....but here is the good news....he said it wont happen.... All things in moderation....can work wonders... Over the months his potassium been a bit high...answer to that...half a banana with his morning porridge instead of a whole one...Another time.  calcium a bit low....given chewy calcium tablets... now both of those are fine again... Its like little adjustments  nothing too extreme...I will close with a smile.....my husband asked.. if I keep to a very strict CKD diet will I really live longer... or....will it just seem longer...He laughed out loud and said.. just keep hydrated and all things in moderation but when on holiday.. you can sin a little... Keep well.      Love Belle x

Just a quick update.  Got my blood tests results back today and GFR has gone from 32 to 38.  Not a huge increase but headed in the right direction!  I have a month before my next blood test.  Any advice on how I can increase it further?

Hi there.... Saw our nephrologist to-day and Frank has gone up a little to 37 which the neph. is quite happy about.  He said.... Frank your body is healing itself, no doubt with the care you are receiving from your good lady. His iron is low at 1 but prefers not to give him anymore tablets but I suggested he change from porridge to cereal, more iron in cereal and more green vegetables than he presently enjoys. The neph. was in agreement. . He said with GFR stable in the 30s your kidneys will last 10 years or more.... All other bio-chemicals are within the normal range. His advice....do whatever you are doing no need to make changes, all things in moderation has proved successful. I took the opportunity as we were his last patient and in no hurry to ask about a friend, i.e. nc7560 and your cyst and would it affect your kidney function... His answer.... definitely not.....He then remembered Frank needed a follow-up for his hard lesion in a kidney and will put in a request for it to be done. I told him we will be in Spain for the month of May (meeting up with friends and some of my American family) He suggested seeing him again with blood and urine tests done a few days earlier at the end of June.... He has a good sense of humour saying lets give you a couple of weeks or more after your holiday as you will probably sin and why not... if you cant sin on holiday when can you ? His parting words were... you are doing well, of course would be good to be in the 40s but don't stress it can happen, if not you are OK, you have gone from 27 to 37 in six months and your bio-chemical results did show several highs and lows but now within the normal range. Enjoy your holiday, have fun.  Your question how to increase it further...you are obviously on the right track, don't stress, stay active, eat a healthy diet with all things in moderation. Stay hydrated... hopefully BP and weight within normal range. Don't touch anti-inflammatory drugs including ibuprofen and enjoy life....Best wishes.  Love Belle x

Thank-you, I will be sure to tell him. Our son (teacher) on holiday from school took us out for the day. We had a lovely meal so no cooking for me to-night.... At the moment my husband is snoring his head off on the sofa in the lounge, we did do quite a lot of walking. Almost 4 weeks until our holiday, no doubt the time will fly by. Please keep in touch, keep well. Love Belle x
