Sad but True

I often think about this segment of the chapter "There is a Solution" of the book AA:

How true this is, few realize. In a vague way their families and friends sense that these drinkers are abnormal, but everybody hopefully awaits the day when the sufferer will rouse himself from his lethargy and assert his power of will.

The tragic truth is that if the man be a real alcoholic, the happy day may not arrive. He has lost control. At a certain point in the drinking of every alcoholic, he passes into a state where the most powerful desire to stop drinking is of absolutely no avail. This tragic situation has already arrived in practically every case long before it is suspected.

Looking at my brothers situation, the family including myself, expected he will grow up one day but we lost him at 32 in 93 and I kept drinking till 2006 until, i realized, I needed external help. The above statements are sad but so true about the alcoholic state of mind. Its so cunning and baffling.

Sorry about your brother. I watched my best friend go down that path……and my family and friends were watching me take the same route. Desperation drove me to do the only thing I had never tried before to sober up. To ask for help and mean it. I couldn’t do it by myself. Not for long, anyway. I hadn’t completely hit my bottom, but I knew what that next bottom would be. A mental institution, jail or death. Nope….not for this gal.
