Was it a Stroke?

I’ve found Health Unlocked invaluable in the past on another forum but I’m new to this one. My husband came home from a night out yesterday. He had a meal and no more than 2 pints of beer. His mate called me when they were on their way home to say Philip was really poorly and he couldn’t get him home. I got him home and he was acting as if he was seriously drunk - his voice was really slurred and he couldn’t control his legs. His mate said he’d had difficulty standing and kept falling over. He eventually went to bed and seemed a lot better this morning although he said his legs still don’t feel right. He’s diabetic so although he’s never done that before we put it down to that. However, now I’m wondering whether he’s had a stroke. Could I have some opinions please? Whatever happened he won’t see his GP but if there’s a chance that it was a stroke then we need to know if it’s likely to happen again

Hetty, when I had mine I was like a rag doll. Never got to the hospital in time so had the crocked look - left leg now more weaker than it was before. That was a long time ago. I had plastic surgery as could keep food in my mouth either side etc etc. I'd say yes he had a stroke

Perhaps getbthe doctor to come to him speed is very important. I told my husnsnd not to call the emergency service when i had my stroke. If he had taken notice of me i would have died get him to see a doctor hopefully it will turn out to be associated with being diabetic hope all goes well

Thank you for your response. Philip is a very stubborn man and only went to see his GP to get a diagnosis about diabetes when his symptoms were impossible to live with - even now he only goes for checkups when the surgery stop his medication so he has to go. This is what I’m dealing with. I will keep trying to persuade him though. I hope your recovery from your stroke was good and that you now lead an active life xx

I'd be urging him to get seen. It may have been a TIA or stroke and a precursor to a more major one.

Or not.

Without medical investigations you will not know.

We can only deal with things once we know what they are.

Good luck!

You are absolutely right - I’ll try to persuade him to get a medical opinion

Could have been a tia which is a sign that a stroke may follow. make him see his gp at least. If it happens again and he ignores it he could well end up permanently disabled. Symptoms of a tia last no longer than 24 hours whereas a stroke lasts much longer.

This lasted about that length of time so I think it really needs investigating even if just to eliminate it. Thank you

You need to persuade him to have a CT scan. That may show if he had a stroke. I had years of cardio fitness and was assessed by an EP at 1% risk of stroke because I was over 65 years old, therefore I didn't need an anticoagulant. Eighteen months later I had a stroke that left me partially sighted and, as a consequence, my driving licence was revoked. If he has a stroke it will affect both of your lives.
