Get off of Dialysis

Hello, why dont we concern ourselves with how to get off of dialysis, I know all doctors say it is not possible !

I'm not sure I understand the statement.

You may be able to get off dialysis if you have acute/some remaining kidney function.

If you have chronic kidney disease/near zero kidney function you require a medical intervention, either treatment through dialysis or transplantation.

Some medical advances, are progressing, lab grown kidneys, (remember the pigs kidneys story) implantable filtration devices (basically a small dialysis machine implanted) and stem cell treatment (which requires no medication after transplant)..

Other than that, its treatment or die..

They coming out with artificial kidneys, that u carry like a heart monitor, some hospitals already have it over in California... And getting more donors willing to donate.

Portable artificial dialysis machines/monitors are not yet available for patient use as they are still being worked on and going through clinical trials. The implantable artificial kidney is set to go to clinical trials this year and still not available for general public. It is possibly years away if there is enough funding and not problems arise. Which hospitals in California already have them? I'd be interested to know if they're in public use as you say and if FDA approved. Thank you

I'm not sure if they are available for public use but it is at I believe it's called USFC, is in San Francisco.

Well, its no different really than heart, lung, liver failure *except* we are fortunate to have dialysis to help us maintain our lives. Believe me there are loads of scientists who study and work in research and development to better dialysis and find a cure for many of the hereditary and other diseases which cause kidney failure. The #1-2 reasons for dialysis are often diabetes and high blood pressure which can improve with lifestyle changes. Finding a cure for both of these things would drastically reduce overall dialysis population. I don't think those of us on dialysis would have an answer for your question. Blessings
