pioglitazone ...and the ban.

Pioglitazone was one of the cheapest and more effective drug available for treating diabetes.Recently it was banned leaving many questions behind.Only two countries in the world apart from India have banned this medicine so far.Even in USA and Britain this molecule has not been banned. Two months back, in World congress of Diabetes which was held at Cochin, Kerala there was no hint of banning of this drug and i sought opinion from many experts who said Pioglitazone could be used safely in lesser dose---upto 22.5 mg/day.Then why this hurry from govt side. What is the other alternative for this group of medicines?. Rosiglitazone being banned long back. what is the real cause for banning this medicine ? Is this due to its real side effects? Or to promote some other costly preparations which have been introduced long back and has not picked up the market yet? The questions stay till they are answered.........srini.

It's not necessary for all diabetics to use pioglitazone. When metformin and sulphonyle ureas become insufficient we can use pioglitazone as an add on therapy. It is an Insulin sensitizer and got a positive action on lipid profile too. So i feel the diabetic practitioners lost a very good weapon from their armory.....!!!!!
