Any Type2 or Prediabetic Triathletes out there? Diet help needed.

Hi,

I've recently been diagnosed as insulin resistant prediabetic (unmedicated) and need some help to continue competing in Sprint distance triathlons. I started up my training again about 8 weeks ago, after intermittent training for 3 months (due to fatigue). I am finding that I can cope well with the training sessions but will bonk the next day, often having a mild hypo that I find very hard to control. This happens particularly when I've competed or gone the extra mile to PB in a run.

My general fitness, which I have built up to, involves 20-30K bike rides, 5-8K runs, 500-1000m swims. I do one brick session of spin/ run per week (90 mins) and have 2-3 rest days per week, and have started one double train at the weekends.

I'm eating low GI gluten free, lactose free diet (I am also coeliac and lactose intolerant). I steer clear of any simple carbs and sugars, coffee and alcohol. I make sure that I have a balanced meals including carbs both before and after exercise (such as GF brown bread banana sandwich).

I know to keep an eye on things for 24 hours after exercise, and am generally balanced. However, when I do hypo I really go for it - not deep, but it goes on for hours. In the OGTT I had it appears it's the drop that gives me the most symptoms.

Would love to hear from anyone who has had similar experiences and learnt to cope with them.

Sarah
