I have been accepted on a BSL level one course starting in septemeber. I am so excited. Currently all I can do is the alphabet and I hope to improve on this.

I saw a poster at my local sight and sound centre and emailed the contact.

I did makaton as I worked in a school for children with learning disabilities. The only 'thing ' I learned is you have to use it on a regular basis for it to become a 2nd language, I'm very rusty now ! Good luck with the course, there are not enough people can use BSL . There is, I believe, a petition asking that BSL is taught in schools as an 'o' level.

Late reply, I am new here and just saw your post. Wish I know BSL to help, I am profoundly deaf since birth and fluent in ASL. Maybe there is deaf social event you could attend, ask your instructor.
