Taking R lipoic acid

I have been taking alpha lipoic acid for 18 months now. For the last 10 years everytime I’ve been to the clinic twice per year at least my stone loading increased - either new stones or larger stones. Since I have been taking lipoic acid my stones have remained the same size. I have read the feeds and have now bought the active R lipoic acid so hopefully it will continue to make a difference.

Hi, I think you've made the right choice with R-Lipoic Acid, you just need to take the right amount of dosage. I've contacted the manufacturer and they say the dosage is 300 - 600 mg, depending on your condition. I will be interested to know how you get on.

Best wishes.

Thank you for this post. I’m wondering if you can share more about differences you noticed after taking ALA. Did it reduce pain or improve any urinary lab markers (eg cysteine solubility?).

I don’t have any concrete data - just a comparison with the previous years rate of stone formation.

Hi there, I know it make sense that the R version of ALA would be healthiest and best for us, but what I learned from the company that Dr. Berkson recommends is that the R form goes through an extra processing step to remove the S form. This process requires chemicals that may not be fully removed. Dr. Berkson recommends the R plus S version for this reason. Some bottles of ALA will say R (without mentioning the S) so you could very well be using an R plus S without knowing it. My suggestion would be to make sure you are not unknowingly ingesting any toxins with your ALA. Metabolic Maintenance brand is the brand Berkson recommends. Best of health to you.
