Tiopronin supply issue

Has anyone been experiencing supply issues with tiopronin medication? I was recently told by Boots the medication I was receiving has been discontinued, so am unable to get any more.

Does anyone have recommendations of pharmacies/chains I could try?

I’m based on East and Central London if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance.

Check who makes it from the paper details usually inside the packet and see if you can find them on line and check that it is discontinued. I don’t rely on Boots for any medication it was never in or took 2-3 weeks to get. Try smaller pharmacies they are more helpful and keener to keep your business than Boots and will phone round other suppliers. Boots like to use the suppliers they own and not source outside that.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll have a look around.

I don't take it so have no personal experience but have a thought. I might be wrong but I think you can take a GP prescription to a hospital pharmacy so it might be worth trying Guys or The Royal Free as they have patients with cystinuria.

I understand from our pharmacy that there have been issues with stock in several of the distributors. They are expecting to have stock back in - maybe by the end of February. As usual with these things, difficult to be sure and the situation could change again.

Hi - I have experienced shortages at times over the years but I have always found a way to get supplies.

Personally I source primarily via the pharmacy at the Royal Free as that was where I was initially looked after when I moved to London, but the team at Guy’s have also helped when I run into issues.

One thing I always do is make sure I have a buffer of 30 days’ pills at all times to allow me to find a new source if needed.

Best Wishes

Neil
