Clear diet guidelines?

Hello all! My husband, in his mid-50’s, suffers from Cysturnia and has had a very bad streak of stone for the last several months. I found this group while doing some research, and glad I did! We are determined to find lifestyle solutions to manage this better.

We are looking for clear diet guidelines, website or books, for managing Cystinuria, does anything like that exist?

Thank you in advance!

Have you looked at cystinuriaUK.co.uk website? Designed to provide clear patient information and has free links to PDF’s of 2 cookbooks that we created for our patients.

Hi

In general the best success seems to come from cutting out as much meat/animal protein as is practical (which puts less methionine into your body to be turned into Cystine) and eating lots of veg and fruit (alkalising the urine which reduces stone formation) and finally to drink LOTS, maybe 5-6 litres per day (which dilutes the urine and again reduces stone formation).

Unfortunately there is no definitive way of showing effectiveness on a day to day basis so staying compliant is challenging but there is plenty of science behind these lifestyle changes being very effective.

Good luck!

I followed a strict diet for a few years of only a small amount of animal protein which is also eggs milk cheese for a year I went vegan ! I am not sure if this helped as I am now eating everything in moderation but have been stone free for over 2 years ! I am 46 now and had stones since I was 12 going only 6 months stone free !
