Gingivitis

For the last few months, I have been battling gigivitis. I do not know if it is a PD thing or something else. Has anyone else have this problem?

I always say: If it's weird it's probably Parkinson's. It might be med related.

I was thinking med related, my main medication is Azilect. I looked through the side effects and did not see it, but both my gums and tongue are raw and were bleeding for several days. I have been using a rinse that helps, but when I think they are healed and I stop the rinse, it goes right back to where it was...fun!

Susie after 3 months on Azilect i developed Gingivitis too. I also took an anticholinergic medication and the two medications resulted in having an extremely dry mouth which i think was the main cause of my gingivitis. Perhaps i wasnt very reliable about avoiding Tryamine foods as well! You may like to google gingivitis and Azilect. You will get a number of hits.

Hikoi,

It is the Azilect, I looked at the side effects "for professionals", it did list gingivitis! Just not sure how I can "cure" the gingivitis, guess I will have to continue to use the mouth rinse. With it, most of the bleeding has stopped.

I knew i'd read on line that it was a side effect, glad you found the link. Is your mouth.very dry? Neuro told me that caused my problems.

Ram 927, thanks for that, will try myself.

Hikoi,

I rechecked the study "for medical professionals", I am a nurse so I guess I qualify to read it! The incidence of gingivitis in the group that used azilect 1 mg was 2 out of 149 test patients. For thos who did not get it, great, for those of us who do, not so great. You might want to read the last message in this thread that I sent to black cat if you are still having the gingivitis.

i have such dry mouth i am miserable and i have gingevititis . i have been dx with sjoregen syndrone. it is a side effect of my fibromyalgia, i have had to spend a forturne on my teeth i had to have gun surgery and i still spend half of my life in a dentist chair since i take the azildldct and u tell me it can cause gingivitis i am sure my dentist will be so not thrilled the the added problems from meds and illness

I am sorry to deliver the bad news of another side effect. My gums have also receded, I am told they can transplant tissue but I have no insurance or money to have it done...I always had perfect teeth and gums until the last couple of years.

susie

i too have receding gums and have gum surgery and they are talking about transplanting tissue so that they can try implants because my teeth have gotten loose and i have lost some like i said before i also have sjorengen'(sp) secondary to fibro and arthritis. my dentist and oral surgeon has told me to use the soft brush and i have rx toothpaste etc, but they want me to brush extra along the gum lines to have the gums recede around my other teeth so they can catch and or prevent gum line cavities seems like a catch 22 to me. like u i have no insurance and always strong healthy teeth so to me right now and for the future i guess i monthly payment to the dentist is going to be part of my life. they also have me using all the biotene products because of the severe dry mouth i have

I hope my fate is not the same as yours. The study that I read for "medical professionals" on the side effects of Azilect that showed gingivitis was small, but real, out of 149 test subjects, 2 people got gingivitis.

Mine had first started about 6 months ago. This is way out there and I did not discuss it with my neuro, but someone gave me a bottle Wildcrafted Siberian Chaga. I have no idea of the cost, but the gingivitis healed and stayed that way until about 6 wks ago. It was sold by a multi-level which I did not want to deal with, it taste horrible, but I think I will give him a call and see what the cost is. It did work for me, so I am willing to test it again to see if it will clear this up!

Mouth pain is something that cannot be ignored, last week my gums were bleeding day in and day out, I had the constant taste of blood constantly, it could not be ignored, at least the Colgate product has helped enough to stop the bleeding.

Best luck to you, I will let you know when I start the Chaga again and see if it has the same results again.

Somewhere I read that people with Parkinson's tend to have more dental issues, because of the inability to brush correctly.

I have had a tendency to overbrush in the past, the dentist told me to only use soft bristle tooth brushes. Think I need to invest in a good electronic tooth brush.

Here is a general link regarding oral issues and Parkinson's. Hope there are some useful comments in it.

Kind regards

Hi Susie...I have had severe dry mouth for about 14 years...because of the meds...I was also having Incontenance problem and urologist gave me meds for that which made it so bad I couldnt talk without choking. So, I deal with it. I have been seeing my dentist recently because my teeth seem to have lost the enamel and my gums bleed a lot. I found that I have bone lose and a loose tooth which they removed. I use tooth paste with fluoride that is for sensitive teeth and dry mouth. There is also mouth wash and spray you can use that helps...one is Bioteen and the other is Act..

I am having deep cleaning and loose teeth removed to help the gums and hopefully save some bone lose...and yes an electrical toothbrush is a must! Good luck...I'm sure PD is cause of this (or maybe the meds are) .

Hi Deb.

I had urinary incontinence for a couple of years, more of a constant dribble. I had a hysterectomy and bladder surgery two years ago and no longer have that problem. I too have lost the enamel on many of my teeth, the gum line is regressed and much of the time I can taste the blood from the bleeding gums...

Just wanted add some additional information that might be helpful for those suffering with gingivitis.

I did an online search to see what else might be out there. There were several comments about the use of Tumeric. Specifically brushing your teeth with it. I have tried it over the last few days and do see a decrease in the swelling and irritation.

Last summer someone whose wife had PD and gingivitis gave me a liquid form of Siberian Chaga. My gums were better in just a few days. I am ordering some from an online source, I want to see if it will get rid of the swelling again and if it will sustain the results. I will keep you up to date.
