I have taken Valium for muscle tension which helps. Wouldn't take it regularly as its highly addictive.

Thank you for the information Trixiedee. I am aware of the addictiveness of Valium and Xanax. I just want some thing to help on the really bad days.

I take Baclofen 10mg if my muscles are very tense. It does bring relief but it makes me sleepy the next day. I myself am looking into this at the moment and would appreciate if you would share any info you find as I will do likewise.

Thank you and have a nice day. xx

I am going to check into this further and will let you know what I find, please do the same. I just believe that if there is some thing to help with the cramping and pain, that it should be available to us, suffering is not helping anyone

I was told valium not indicated for PD. Anyway my son OD'd on it. I take half a xanax as needed for painful dystonia.

I take baclofen also at night i think it really helps

Well, here goes, you are probably going to really cringe when you you hear all that I am on! Baclophen (4 a day), Klonopin (6 1/2 a day,) Stalevo (6 a day), Sinemet (1 at bedtime) Azilect (1 1/2 a day), Xanax (as needed)! And I do only take it when needed! Not even everyday! Just when I get that jumpy feeling inside or a panic attack coming on! Haven't taken now in two weeks! It's a lot, I know. But without it, I don't sleep or function at all! And have RLS and leg and feet cramps at night! I was on Mirapex also, but had to stop that because I had a reaction to it! Which I was upset about, because it really helped the legs and feet! So I don't know what others do but this is my regimen! As always talk to your Neuro!!

Blessings,

Carol

I don’t cringe at all. I have had a lot of anxiety throughout the last 7 years. It’s so bad right now, my neck gets stiff, I get heart palpitations, and breathing can get difficult. (I’m going through a panic spiral right now, which happens after traumatic events.). Like you I take a host of meds. I take Baclofen 3 times a day, clonazepam every night (can’t sleep lately), sinemet, cymbalta, and azilect. I want to take something for the rigidity and pain in my neck, like clonazepam, but I’m afraid of the consequences. Going to visit my Dr. tomorrow for suggestions. I just want to feel good again.

I find thatwhen i exercise regularlyl i do not get the problem. Taking a banana is. Better for more potassium. Keep off the chemicals. See a naturpath.

I eat a banana almost ever single day. I think I might get the mineral potassium

I take Valium for leg cramps, bananas did not do the trick. I have 2 mg tabs and I take up to 6 mg depending on how bad the leg cramps are. I take them in the middle of the night if I have cramps. Here's what I think: we have a progressive, incurable neurological disease and whatever makes it feel better is worth taking. I don't care if it's addictive. I wouldn't take more and more of an addictive drug, that would be counterproductive. I'm not talking about getting blotto on medication. But if taking an addictive drug like Valium or even Percocet helps a little bit, then why shouldn't we have that in our arsenal to take when we need them?

I tried everything I could think of as my legs used to cramp so badly that I swear I didn't sleep for years. One of the idiot neurologists I went to suggested I get up and do stretching exercises, no help there. I am now on Azalect (very pricy) Sinement and at night I take Requip XL and Neurontin. I sleep like a rock. Once I was hesitant to take very many meds but at this point i don't care as life is hardly worth living if you dread nightfall because you know the pain is going to be there again.

I take a muscle relaxer called Tizanidine 2mg tablets 1 to 2 as needed but( always a BUT) be careful of the sedation effect, I never take if I'm driving, but it did help with the muscle spasms allot!!

Hi Everyone: In answer to the question about muscle relaxants I take cyclobenzaprine HCI 10mg. This was prescribed to me for neck spasms after an automobile accident damaged my neck. I have continued to take this med for seven years. It now helps with cramping at night. I also take effexor 75mg for depression related to PD and take zopiclone 7.5mg I do not have drowziness with this bedtime combo including sinemet. Most of the time I get through the night but at times I go through a pattern of waking up several times during the night and this is most often due to the spasms.

I am going to give you a quick chronology to see if anyone else had this progression. First was the neck and head injury. This was followed by a small stroke. That was followed by a lengthy diagnosis to finally conclude that I had dystonia. I responded to sinemet (dopamine responsive dystonia) but two years later I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. My question is, has anyone else had a head injury before their diagnosis of PD?

I am new to the site so forgive me if this question has been asked before.

Hi Diana,

I'm new to this site and newly diagnosed; so, I haven't an answer to your question. I read your post about head injury before the dianosis of pd. Well I didn't have a head injury but I had a spinal fusion in March 2012. Woke up from anesthesia with this lovely tremor in my right thumb. I just got diagnosed with pd on wednesday. I was wondering if my back surgery had anything to do with causing pd. I'm scared because now they are pushing my neck surgery thru quickly because of the pd. If you get an answer please post because I'd be interested in hearing anything. Thank you and wishing good health for you....Lili

I was in a very bad car accident and experienced severe head trauma, when my head hit the steering wheel. The accident was about 30 years prior to being diagnosed with PD, which I've had for almost 15 years.

There are quite a few people in the local Parkinsons group in Victoria, BC where I live who have had head injury.

regards

Diana
