I recently had a blood test showing that I had very low iron in my blood. Is PD or something else causing the low iron?
I eat a LOT of spinach, vegetables and fresh fruits. Not interested in eating beef.
Thanks for any insights.

hi dican
i really do not know whether itis the PD or the meds#
your diet is much liek mine except thati do not eat enough spinach!!
lol JIll
we are doing some basic research to confirm a link with Iron and PD at uni. Of Sydney.
it is very early however their seems to be some correlation.
Thank you. I hope I'll see the results of the research.
hi johnsilk,
Research is now rcognising that one pathway is in some sense connected to every other one, I highlight the literature evidence suggesting that the degenerative effects of many diseases and toxicological insults converge on iron dysregulation. This highlights
specifically the role of iron metabolism, and the detailed and
has significant implications for the use of iron chelating
substances (probably in partnership with appropriate antioxidants)
as nutritional or therapeutic agents in inhibiting
both the progression of many degenerative diseases including Parkinsons disease
.
The article is far from basic,pretty indigestible;

chemical toxicology and others as examples

Have you had other tests to exclude things like ulcer.Low iron can add greatly to fatigue green veg and a medicinal brown ale or guiness each day[yes it contains iron].If you have to take iron supplement as a medication Certain medications, including antacids, can reduce iron absorption. Iron tablets may also reduce the effectiveness of other drugs, Parkinson's disease drugs methyldopa, levodopa, and carbidopa. At least 2 hours should elapse between doses of these drugs and iron supplements.
Sorry, I don't know what medicinal brown ale or guiness are.
I am taking Nexium, I'll check into that link. Thanks for help in knowing when to take the iron supplement.
Oh dear DiCan, I think a trip to Ireland to the Guiness factory is necessary
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness
And as for the brown ale (beer) calling it medicinal means one has a good excuse for a drink.
Hope I have got that right Balderdash!
Vit B12 is linked to fatigue, iron deficiency in some people and POSSIBLY, and I stress it is very early days on this and the theory will probably sink without trace in a few years, dyskinesia in some people. Have you had your B12 levels checked?
Yes, my vitamin levels were checked with my iron level.
I'll pay attention to my dyskinesia to make sure my iron supplement is not effecting it...unless it improves it .
Thank you all for the input.
The iron supplement seems to be helping with my nightly leg problems (that is why my neurologist tested my vitamin & iron levels).
I am sure that I heard somewhere that spinach can actually take iron out of your body as well, so you could try cutting it down for a while to see if that helps.
I read that also, but wasn't sure it was true.
Guess I'll cut down (or out) the spinach.
It is so hard to know what to believe.
Doesn't it 'chelate' with the iron to form an insoluble compound or something?
I have B12 injection bi monthly - borderline anaemic - low iron but enlarged red blood cells. Nothing to do with PD
Thank you. My B12 seems to be ok.
