Low blood pressure

I had my blood pressure taken yesterday at my doctors. It was so low the nurse took it again and also reported it to a doctor before letting me leave.

I know low blood pressure is associated with PD. Is it the PD or the levadopa causing it?

Levadopa can lower blood pressure some. The following meds can lower blood pressure even more.

Dopamine agonists: Activates dopamine receptors and helps in managing the disease.

Bromocriptine . Pergolide . Pramipexole . Ropinirole

Exactly how low is your low blood pressure? Any difference standing or sitting? Any symptoms? If you are not having symptoms (like lightheadedness or fainting or fatigue) it is not a problem. If you are having symptoms it can be managed by increasing your salt intake, but first you should get a blood pressure cuff to make sure you are not overdoing it.

For years I had prodromal signs of PD; I donated blood regularly and BP was tested each time. Sometimes it was so low the nurses wouldn't draw my blood for donation. When it was 80/40 I was okay to donate but not when it was lower. Nowadays at the neuro I'll be 140/90 and they want to put me on drugs to lower it. I argue that it's white coat syndrome but they don't care. Ten minutes ago sitting on my couch the cuff sez 122/77. But then standing it was 122/82. So maybe they're partially right. I see the neuro on Friday. I'll ask about vascular PD.

Those are ideal numbers.

Hubby’s ones were 110/70 last visit. Is that normal/ok?

Anything below 130 systolic (the higher of the two numbers) is good. Generally speaking the lower the better until one gets below 100 when the adverse effects of low blood pressure can start to manifest.

The white coat syndrome is very much real.My BP is usually 110/70 but when tested by the nurse 155/90.

I took my BP monitor the next time and it showed roughly the same result as the nurses, i.e high.

It did prove my monitor was working OK and the White Coat syndrome exists.

I can only speak for my case, but I don't take any medicine at all for my PD, so my low blood pressure is just from the Parkinson's. My normal range is 110 over 70. I've gone as low as 64 over palp. Just keeping hydrated, adding sodium to your diet which is something I try to avoid in the past, and not exercising too much at one time seems to help it.

pd usually but meds can exacerbate it....excercise and increase your salt intake...hang tough

My husband’s blood pressure was diagnosed just before his PD diagnosis and therefore before he was taking any drugs.

You really should have asked the nurse what your BP was and the Doctor having been consulted by the nurse should have spoken to you and reassured you it was ok
