Yes, I must have something sweet every day. At the moment I'm eating liquorice. And have bought some dark chocolate for the weekend...Isn't it healthy?

Yes especailly when I am tired. I need the energy it gives. I read in a medical article that a candy bar is good eveyr day. So this sugar thing must be real.

The craving and need for sugar (glucose) maybe the brains way of saying it needs nutrition. Glucose is what the brain uses. That is whay even diabetics must have some glucose daily. Without it the brain will not function properly. With PD it is quite possible that our bodies are doing what it would normally do to survive. If we have a vitamin or mineral deficiency we will crave foods that are high in what is needed. Since glucose (sugar) is brain food, why not crave it. We just have to know the limitations. We still have to maintain control. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 2 years before PD. I gained weight while taking Lyrica. After I stopped taking thatI Iost the weight and then some. But the craving for sweets in still there. But I have to remember that I am still the one in control.

Our bodies get enough sugars from natural fruits and veg..;artificial sugar is very high in sugar content and to strong for our bodies..a mon avis..

Crave sugar in any form. Favorites are cupcakes and licorice. Although the licorice helps with another problem for which I am eternally grateful.

Yes, I could resist most sweets before PD. Now I find myself eating ice cream out of the container! etc. :D

Sounds like my husband. He will eat a complete dinner and declare himself stuffed. Then sit down an hour later with the container of ice cream, covered in whipped cream and a spoon. He also eats more cookies than he eve did so I try to bake them myself so I know it is less processed and a bit better for him.

Sugar is the worst thing to take. Speak to any microbiologist or nutritionist..worse than salt and fat. It makes your cholesterol go up and puts strain on your pancreas etc..I am sure it could make pd symptoms worse. We crave it because a lot of us have candida of the gut which makes you want more. It also creates a lot of saliva...sorry but you can get less sweet non sugar jams and xylotol from plants is ok to sweeten things without bad effects. Product name is 'perfect sweet..' if you have a sweet tooth like me!,

I would like to be able to taste it again. I might offer that given the obscure and almost nonexistent sleep patterns of most PD's leaves a lot more time to think about being hungry for lack of anything else to do at 3AM! Cravings and compulsive behavior are signs of depression as well. My next question ... Are you on Mirapex ? That agonist more than others has increased this kind of behavior and compulsions as well.

No I am four years in to pd and have taken no medication. Im reading the John Coleman bok at present to keep symptoms at bay.

i meant that prior to parkinsons did anyone have a sugar craving.? I thnk the craving is a reaction to the candida germs needing sugar to survive;;;not compulsive behaviour!

Aa a post war celebration baby i was brought up on sugar, bananas etc you could not get during the war. Has a diet heavy in fast burning carbs affected our bodies along with pollution etcI am just looking for pieces in the jigsaw to solve what leads to pd in the first place...seem to be more people with pd today? None in my family before me..

Prior to PD only had a sugar craving during PMS!

Your theory about candida is food for thought. :) I'm trying a diet that is 60 % fruit & veg, 20% protein, 20% carb. So far feel better but still can't say no to dessert. Post war sugar loading? Oh yeah!

Dopamine and sugar. What a coincidence. If you have no diabetes problem, a little sugar is a better mood enhancer than an antidepressant. Works faster, is cheaper and more readily available. You will probably shake off the extra calories. Just don't over do.

Some of meds make me nauseous. Found if I eat a pudding cup or two gingersnaps 15 min before I take pill I am ok. Even sugar free pudding seems to work. Have used small ice cream cone on the road. Don't even have to eat the whole thing.

My husband puts sugar on everytihng, but I believe it's because he has lost so much weight he thinks it'll help. It hasn't. He constantly eats, but it takes him so long that I don't think he's getting anything from his food. He won't let me feed him, so he keeps losing pounds. He's 5'10, 123pds.

I still think sugar is the worst thing for health. It is like alcohol it may make you feel tempoarily high but makes you quickly very depressed afterwards. The safest way is to keep a balanced sugar level and get it from slow burning carbohydrates than high/low manufactured sugar! Ask any nutritionist..

Another bad effect of sugar on pd is that it procuces too much saliva which makes us dribble.

I can't seem to have enough sweets and goodies. My GP said that one of my meds could be the cuprit He said the meication could make me crave sweets. But he didn't know which one because craving sweets is a side effect of all of them. the wonderful thing is that after getting rel fat a couple years ago, I went on the slim fast diet ( YUCKIE FOOD ) my appitite has vanished. so I can eat what ever I want, I'm still loosing weight. I go to the doctor often I'm always a few pounds ligewr than the last time, so far at at least 60 lbs has gone away.
