Glove Update

Hi Folks,

Want to share where we are with our glove project. The thought is that work gloves and two separate sets of electronics would made the system much less obvious and maybe encourage people to incorporate them into their daily activities. My colleague and I are developing approaches that will significantly shrink both the electronics and the finger cups. Progress is slow but steady.

Good on you. Few questions if I may. a) How long does the 9V battery last ? b) How long are the sessions ? c) What type of tactors are you using ? d) Is that a customised housing - the 'white rectangle ' device ? Keep the spirit going ...👍

Hi NuroMod, Thanks. a) tested the rechargeable 9 volt batteries past 5 hours. b) two hours. c) using VG1040003D LRAs tuned to 250 hz using the arduino tune library. e) just a 3D model that I pulled down, perhaps from this site. Let me know if you would like me to send the two files.

One more thing. I neglected to mention that I worked to prevent the mass of a finger cup, physically affixed to the LRAs, from profoundly dampening the LRA’s vibration. Instead LRAs sit on latex cups used as “springs” below many of the keys found on a large inexpensive calculator.

Hi Oldbikeguyjim - good to catch up again.. You mean the rubber/silicon membrane switches ? So you used them as " damperners / shock absorbers " ? Did you not used ERMs in the ' board version " initially ? Are you using a Nano CPU ? And how are you driving the LRAs ? And what is the feedback from the end user(s) ? Is the finger fitment inside the glove allowing the vibration to be felt on the finger , reliably ? Thanks.

oldbineguyjim… Is this something you plan to eventually take to market?

Stanford and peter tass have patents which would be enforceable against anyone seeking to market a glove therapy

And it would require MDD (93/42/EWG) approval to be sold as a medical device in europe and equivalent FDA approval in the USA. The various glove projects on this forum are strictly DIY

Hi NuroMod, we are still using the circuit you recommended. I actually used the latex material that is usually printed out as a sheet and supports the hard plastic keys on many calculators. However the membrane keys on a membrane keyboard would probably also work. The object is to no “muffle” the LRAs but having it move any attached mass. The latex material gives the LRAs as much vibration as possible so that there’s sensation on the fingertips. I 3-D print small buttons about 2 mm wide by 3 mm high as “contactors” for the fingertips and I glue them onto the LR A’s. I did start with ERM’s but by the time I got around to making the first vibration pad I was already using LRA’s. Yes, we are using to Nanos as the microprocessors. Then we use a voltage regulator to give us the three volts necessary for the nano. It is early days for this design but I find it is very easy and natural to bend the fingers and make good contact.

Looks great. Any updates on effectiveness yet?

most importantly what is your basis for patterning the impulses?

Oldbikeguyjim profile image
Oldbikeguyjim in reply toManypony

Hi Manypony, the 100 msec ON and 66 msec OFF is well covered in early discussions on this thread. The finger diagram of which finger vibrate in which order is presented in two graphs and I believe in Dr Tass’ 2017 paper. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

I am so technically challenged I wonder if you can send it to me somehow, not sure how to find it here

Sure. I am travels so I may need a couple of days.

Hi Monypony,

I am pretty sure that the information on "basis for patterning the impulses" that you are interested in and that Oldbikeguyjim is referring to is in the thread called "Tass Vibrating Gloves: DIY, Hacks, Ideas, Prototypes..." on this website. Here is the link: healthunlocked.com/cure-par.... You should be able to cut and paste that into your browser and get to it. If that does not work search for in the search bar at the top of this page called "Search HealthUnlockced".

There are almost 600 replies on the thread and you will need to scroll through looking for what you want. Once you work out the keywords to search on, your browser has a search function that you should be able find from the browser menu or entering Ctrl + F and entering your search terms.

There is a lot more discussion on that forum than would be coinvent to gather together and send you.

Maybe Oldbikerguyjim can do better for you when he gets back from his travels.

Take care.

I run a firm that has some additive manufacturing capability. Please reach out if we can be of any service (no cost) in producing prototype parts or enclosures. I would love any other links to this project.

Thank you for the very generous offer. There are people on this thread that would like to participate in their own version of the gloves but lack one or more of the skills needed to complete a pair of gloves. We make to same offer of assistance in the electronic space.

@Ctime and @oldbikeguyjim - let's talk. Friends (EE/semi types) and I have ideas that we're running with (also for individual DIY use only) and are looking for some PCB production support ...

We like the idea of talking further. I am vacationing in Chicago at this time but will pass on your comments to my colleague. It is always worth hearing what others are up to.
