supplements and side effects

Let’s be clear; I love this group and any problems that I will discuss here are totally caused by my lack of attention. Ten years since dx Im doing pretty well. As we age, however, ailments are converging on each other and treatment for one condition can lead to more serious illness. So having had one symptom totally unrelated to PD and fortunately having decent insurance this led to multiple scans, bloodwork and procedures identify the cause and to rule out cancer. As a three time cancer survivor getting the all clear is good for my peace of mind. I have erosive gastropathy; irritation. I’ve been taking supplements suggested by members of our group and realized that several especially NAC can cause heartburn and stomach issues. I have switched brands and take in the middle of a meal. My MDS has cited studies that seem to indicate that NAC alleviates PD symptoms. Now, however I’m not going to take almost all supplements for awhile and see if these problems resolve. I will of course continue to take c/l, Rasagiline and one other medication for an unrelated issue. What made me do this; a doctor wants me to take a drug for the stomach irritation with serious side effects. Here I’ve learned that the more pills you take the greater the risk of harmful effects.

I suggest Cow Ghee.

Don't worry about A1/A2, that is all marketing.

1 Teaspoon slightly warm (Liquid) Ghee first thing in the morning. Nothing for 30 mins post Ghee consumption.

Increase to 2 Tablespoon over 20 - 30 days and evaluate if benefitted.

Refrain immediately from taking any supplements and any home recommended remedies from here, including ghee. Since you have had cancer three times and have a definite serious stomach injury, you are not in the position to take any undue risks which could at the end of a SUBSEQUENT chain of events end your life AND DO SO IN A RATHER PAINFUL AND EXTREMELY TROUBLESOME MANNER. THIS IS A WEBSITE FOR AMATEURS WHO NEED HAVE NO PROFESSIONAL TRAINING, CAPACITY FOR REASONABLE ASSESSMENT OF RISKS OR SENSE OF BOUNDARIES OR PROPRIETY OR RESPONSIBILITY, AND NEED HAVE NONE BASED ON THE TERMS OF INVOLVEMENT AND IDENTITY AND THIS WEBSITE HAS DISCLAIMED ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING SAID HERE OR ADVICE TAKEN HERE.

NAC - N-acetyl cysteine - is highly acid due to the added acetyl group. This is also what helps it to be better absorbed at the cellular level. The high acidity is irritating to the GI tract, especially the stomach. I add 25% by weight calcium hydroxide, also known as pickling lime, to the NAC powder, which neutralizes the acidity.

Yes, do your own research!

Don't take anything at face value.

Everyone here is just a name, those who are suggesting potential remedies as well as those who are asking you to refrain from trying a potential improvement protocol.

BTW Ghee is known to soothe the digestive tract and help protect the alimentary tract from abrasive/corrosive action of ingested food and supplements

could you consult with a nutritionist to work alongside your neurologist / oncologist medication? Mine really helps with suggestions for digestive tract with things like slippery elm and mastic gum. But you would need to work with somebody who advises you as a unique individual , and understands your particular sensitivities along with a working knowledge of drug interactions.

Both my hwp and myself have in our time have had very bad advice from doctors so learnt the hard way to take time ( if possible) to evaluate, research and decide. We have taken on board that we need to take responsibility for ourselves. Where Parkinson's is concerned if it were not for info and discussions in this group we would be groping in the dark. Neuros here hand over c/l and that is that. But of course one attempts to make as informed a decision as one can. In our case we have found gp's more willing to discuss and advise. Good luck with resolving your issues!

I also get a lot of acid indigestion, several times a day, possibly from taking NAC. What works for me, and is totally(well MOSTLY. You could get too much calcium) benign, is chewing on a calcium carbonate tablet ( and swallowing with water). Its like a Tums, without all the sugar. And as for MarionP's rant, I do have a medical background.
