accutane / isotretonoin

My first Parkinson’s symptoms started just 2 weeks after beginning a treatment for rosacea with accutane / isotretonoin. Isotretonoin has a long list of serious side effects of which I was not aware. It also gave me back pain.

Anyone else here who took accutane and later developed PD?

When I was sixteen, I took Accutane for acne. That was a long time ago and it was common to take accutane back then.

I know other teens who took Accutane and never got PD.

Isotretinoin, also known as Roaccutane, can increase dopamine production in the brain, which may lead to adverse mood effects. Isotretinoin may also influence cognition in adulthood.

The Effect of Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) Therapy on Depression and Quality of Life of Patients with Severe Acne 2014 pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl....

Several studies have explained the effect of retinoic acid on serotonin and dopamine secretion and production on molecular levels. They have shown that isotretinoin causes elevation in dopamine production in brain leading to its adverse mood effects; its effect on hippocampus has also been established.

Interesting all the gastrointestinal side effects, considering the potential gut brain connection for PD: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotr...

Colitis

Ileitis

Dry throat

Gastrointestinal haemorrhage

Haemorrhagic diarrhoea

Inflammatory bowel disease

Nausea

Pancreatitis

Hi if Accutane increases dopamine I thought PD was a dopamine deficiency condition?

You are correct, dopamine deficiency is the root of parkinson's. But excess dopamine can also cause problems, although they are not Parkinson's unless you are taking a dopamine agonist or medication containing dopamine or L-Dopa or Carbidopa, for Parkinson's or a psychiatric condition and it consequently bumps your dopamine too high, there can be side effects which you can certainly look up easily enough. You have heard of Goldilocks no doubt? Too much OR too little of something often causes problems, such as with hypothyroidism versus hyperthyroidism... But too much dopamine as a side effect of something you ingest is not a disease, it is a side effect.

I had really bad rosacea prior to my diagnosis of PD. I don't recall taking any medicine for it though. Rosacea went away sure the after I started treatment for PD

hubby had acne and roseacea for years then was put on doxycycline for years. Berberine and allimed (garlic) got rid of it alternating with probiotics.

we changed lifestyle ie diet , exercise too.

i blame doxycycline for my PD.

Depletes b vitamins and passes blood brain barrier.

Yes, I wondered if it was a cause

No connection. I ate carrots once and later got PD. Just about the same probability of a connection between them as in your example.

Not really as Accutane is a drug and drugs can harm the body !

Vitamin A toxicity. This is a temporal relationship and you should report the adverse event to the CDC.

Liver enzymes are monitored while taking isotretinoin. Biologically, Vitamin A is stored in the liver and we have about 2 years supply. No one tests Vit. A levels before beginning treatment with isotretinoin. This is a failure of the medical system.

The serious adverse affects of measles is due to Vit. A deficiency and the treatment is high dose supplementation. No one tests Vit. A levels before immunization. This is a failure of the medical system.

My personal experience is with a documented pesticide poisoning from agricultural misuse by my neighbor. You can imagine the liability of this and the vigorous attempts from the medical and legal cartels to silence me. One of the effects of my poisoning was Vitamin A dumping from the liver. It was my body's attempt to save my life. I now have liver disease and kidney disease (lost one in June). My husband is being evaluated for ALS and has recently developed a DVT. Our youngest son (20) has kidney disease. I am devastated and mad as hell.

Our neighbors wanted our land so badly they were willing to murder us. The medical system didn't give a fuck about consequences for withholding medical diagnosis and treatment. My medmal is well developed and they're afraid of me now. A multiple myeloma diagnosis is immanent for me. My heart is broken for the probably that my son and husband will also be diagnosed with blood cancer. Our older son is at risk of losing his family, how do I prepare him for this?

Question everything.

Accurate depletes copper and increases oxidative stress which is a key factor in Parkinson’s. It affects ATP7b which is critical for mitochondrial energy production.

My husband took Accutane as a teenager. diagnosed at age 51 with Parkinson's. His twin brother did not take Accutane and does not have Parkinson's.

Did the twin have the same skin issues?

I took Accutane in my late 20s and was diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 49, in retrospect I can trace very early symptoms back to my early 40s.

Interesting. I had terrible acne when I was a teen into my early 20’s and took Accutane forever. And that awful sulfur medication; I smelled like a matchstick. My skin is heavily pock marked. I moved to Florida and the pure air filled sun light and fresh saltwater dried it up quick. I never connected this scenario.

then again, is it the drug or is it just the same condition that causes the acne causes the PD?
