My dad is tired for most of the day. any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

My dad has right now settled into what we call a stable phase in his condition. We had our roller coaster times which thankfully has passed. He used to have extreme motor fluctuations which we solved with changing his sinimet over to mucuna.

My dad said that when he was on sinimet he had 4 times a day 1.5 hours when he was fully alert and then his 'off' started until the next dose. We always tried to cramp all his activites in those ON moments. It was so stressful to say the least.

Since hes on mucuna hes kind of ON all the time but my dad said he never reaches the level of alertness that he had with sinimet. He no longer experiences the extreme OFF which literally caused his body to shut down. He could be on the street and we quickly had to call a taxi, getting him into a taxi when his legs were stiff was a nightmare. If we were near the house we ran to get his wheelchair. Since he has switched to mucuna he has never touched his wheelchair.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hes 76 and still loves to do all his usual activities. he works and goes for walks but many times he has to sit to nap which bothers him.

At present, we are grateful for his stable condition. He keeps saying there are 2 things that he wishes he can find a cure for. 1. tiredness 2. constipation

What happens if you increase his mucuna dosage?

How much mucuna does he take, and how often? Does he add carbidopa?

Good morning lisa103,

I am under Modopar and High Dose Thiamin (vitamin B1).

This summer I have experienced everyday an excessive tiredness with no wish to do anything.

My problem was solved when I added Magnesium supplementation (2 400 mg/day). Permanent tiredness has now gone ! I am enjoying gardening and sport activities...

I hope it might help you.

PS : in fall/winter time, I supplement also with vitamin D - as they say that the poor sun hours are not enough to provide all the vitamin D which is needed to properly assimilate the Magnesium supplement.

How much much mucuna does he take? It looks like you can buy it over the counter and the bottle I looked at said one a day.

When I first started C/L I never experienced on/off periods. It was just off and nap after meds. I got tested and treated for H-pylori after which time I experienced 4hours of symptoms relief and better medication absorption Hope this helps you.

Have your doctor check your B12 and if you take magnesium, make sure you are taking the right one. There are about 5 different types.🥊

Thanks for the article but it doesn’t mention specific types of magnesium. My hubby takes malate but I would love to know if another type will help with fatigue thanks again

Good morning Wecanwinthis, on my side, I am using chelated bisglycinate magnesium provided by a French lab called Nutrixeal. It definitely helps me with my tiredness.

I suggest looking at Magtein, magnesium L-Threonate. Appartenly is more absorbable in the brain. There are many good companies that sell it, we use the Dr Mercola product and the Doctors Best. Good luck! And good old cod liver oil will help with constipation as well as Milk of Magnesia and additional fiber.

he is taking Mucuna from british supplements. Very high dose 4 times a day. Perhaps its too high for him.

You need to add a "transport helper to the brain" such as Carbidopa. A natural alternative would be green tea or Matcha green tea. I believe there are forum members who have tried this. Also, see the link below.

Good luck with your dad.

It does indeed seem best to combine Sinemet with mucuna in adjusted dosages, as suggested by pdpatient. However the underlying problem likely lies in the last word of your message: Constipation. This hinders the optimal use of Sinemet and mucuna. Change in dosage or type of levodopa does not solve this problem. Therefore, addressing the issue of constipation is crucial.

The latest NoSilverBullet webinar by Bas Bloem, which took place yesterday, provides a lot of information on this topic and is highly recommended. Michel0220 mentioned that the recording will be posted shortly.
