I recently wrote a post about my father feeling so much better after his stomach was emptied. He had 2 occasions, after colonoscopy and after bowel obstruction. His posture was straight and overall Parkinson was better for few days .
I therefore booked him an appointment at the holistic clinic for a colonic irrigation . I thought that could perhaps make him feel better.
does anyone have experience with it?

I have been regular like clockwork for years - ever since writing the piece on constipation remedies. Personally I am content with that. Also over these years I've had several courses of antibiotics for one reason or another and in my case that has made no difference. But I was starting from a baseline of being good in that regard. On the other hand if your colon situation is not satisfactory then it would make sense to consider some kind of treatment. JMHO.
There is something to this . I eat raw vegetables , bran cereal , prune juice , raw fruit applesauce, canned peaches, grapes and oranges and apples when available and the result is I dont have the boulders to contend with any more but I am still only sitting on the seat every 4 or 5 days instead of every day. The only thing I do not use is that powder that you mix into a glass of water and choke down. The pain in my back, shoulders and neck almost goes away soon after and then starts to build again until the next visit.
We believe that the PD is causing the pain by deformation of my back and it is reduced some by CD / LD but if anyone has suggestions on how to increase frequency I would be forever grateful. I really dont want to start the high colonic but I also may have to.

I take magnesium citrate in the morning, magnesium taurate midday, and magnesium glycinate at bedtime (total mag around 400 mg/day) and 1 gram vitamin C with breakfast. Ever since I started that (shortly after PD diagnosis), I've been more regular than I've ever been in my life. If I skip those supps for more than 2 days, things start slowing down. I've never had constipation but have had extremely slow, sluggish digestion my entire life.
Once every 4 days is really extremely bad Gymsack. Must do something about it! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day also for your constipation. I always start with a very high-fibre portion, a bowl of blueberries of which you can keep kilos in the freezer, with real muesli with nuts ( so no sugared cruesli), to which I added chia seeds, flaxseed, oat flakes. Other good fruits to alternate with are plums, figs, pears, all kinds of berries, apples. I prefer to eat this with (greek) yoghurt or cottage cheese, but can also have some plum juice. With this, I first drink black tea followed by coffee. Personally, I always need some "solid" food afterwards, wholemeal bread with toppings of one's choice. After breakfast, a brisk walk in the fresh Canadian outdoors, also to get the all-important early morning NIR. From experience, do this in a green area with plenty of shelter and don't forget to bring some Cleanex... I don't need a eternal gratefulness, just a quick note to let me know if you "have succeeded".
I was just looking at my original reply and realized that there's a typo. I take THREONATE in the middle of the day, not taurate. I buy taurate for my husband because of the potential blood pressure benefits, but I don't take that one (I have low BP already).
This is somewhat related, but I had a really bad stomach bug recently and after being well and truly empty for 24-48h, I had 24h of feeling amazing, at least pd symptoms wise.
I wasn't sure if this was because I fasted, because I was empty or because I didn't have any meds for at least 24h.... I was going to post about medication breaks.
thats really interesting. My dad in hospital also had a break of his medications. I wonder if its was the break or the emptying of his bowels. Hes booked in tommorow for a colonic. Ill update if any positive changes
Lisa, I am considering colonic irrigation for my husband as well. He had the same experience during hospital stay as your father, when a CT scan showed faecal impaction. I think it was high up in the ascending colon (but no diverticulitis).
I really would like to hear from anyone who's had it done. Did it feel effective, getting the caked up faecal impaction out? Was it better than other methods? If you've booked your father in, please update me as well how it went.
I've got my husband already on a stack of other stuff to get his bowels going, such as magnesium powder, psyllium husks in his breakfast muesli, prunes and other fruit, coloxyl plus senna, movicol and of course plenty of fluids. It produces alternating diarrhoea, but I suspect there is still an area high up in the colon that is always holding some poo back, judging from the bad smells and sometimes unable to even feel the bowel movement coming.
Hi Lisa, I was considering trying a colonic for my mum. Wondering how your dad felt after it, and during I guess. My mum’s movement is slow and I think they want you to get up and sit on a toilet after. Wondering about the logistics of that.
this is probably my worst symptom after tremor. I have been chronically constipated since childhood. Shy bowel I have seen it called. I go pretty much daily but it has been getting harder to do. I started senna reading and it helps but I don't want to become dependent. I like the idea of the 3 kinds of mag but my stack is already 15 plus. Maybe a colonic once in a while would be the thing. It just seems so unnatural to me.
my mother has parkinson and last year she had rectal bleeding due to irrigation of constipation. Since then we gave her alot of mesical and nonmedical things like magnesium citrate 250 mg/day, inulin - prebiotic, psyllium husk fiber, motilium, metpamide, different kinds od laxatives. She is well. She is bedridden, unable to walk. Also she has jejunostomy because of dysphagia. If a person is able to walk and drink, please walk and drink water, eat vegetables. Take magnesium citrate, psyllium husk, inulin. These are my recommendations. Good luck
