How does yoga help PD? Not complaining, I look forward to Friday Yoga all week. I see how PD-boxing helps and I see how Tai Chi helps but how does painful bending help?
Yoga?: How does yoga help PD? Not... - Cure Parkinson's
Yoga?
Its similar to Tai Chi, a mind body integration exercise.
Also painful bending is a perception. Did you ever see any Yoga practitioner display any discomfort?
The fact is Yoga is extremely individual, and suited to individual threshold.
I take classes at Hartford Health in Mystic, Ct. Tai Chi is over-flowing, PD boxing is getting close. But Yoga has zero-to-three members. Often someone attends class once but then doesn't come back next week. One time nobody showed up, not even the instructor. I bring it up at every chance and the consensus seems to be fear of falling. I counter that every movement is done with a chair available. I worry the class will be cancelled but I can't figure out how to help. I enjoyed meditation class years ago. It turned into gossip sessions but that increased the enjoyment. Maybe I can ask for Meditation class here? Or...offer to teach? For Tai Chi nothing is required. For PD boxing 8 ounce gloves are needed. For Yoga a mat is needed but there are a few used in storage. For Meditation we used a Zafoose, a special cushion. All available thru Google.
If it's Yoga or Meditation sessions you seek, there's a couple of guided sessions on YouTube like Dr. Sanjay Raghav who is a movement disorder specialist and also has a YouTube channel and an app named Outpace Parkinson's
I do yoga 3x a week have gor years. Itf you are real rigid I suggest chair yoga. It gets those muscles moving with the joints. It has gotten harder for me but i adjust with blocks and modified moves. My instructors dont want us to hurt.
Thanks for the note. For 40 years I was involved with athletics. In high school the mantra was, "No pain, No gain." The instructor has chairs available. For most of the hour I use a chair. I wish yoga was more than once a week. At home I I try to mimic the poses she uses. But I feel ridiculous when I push too hard and fall over. I tend to yell, TIMBER! as I'm collapsing.
I do power yoga 1-2 times a week especially the days I am not running. It helps with muscle fatigue and rigidity. Also, it helps with mind calmness and balance. I use videos from Travis Elliott on YouTube.
I Love stretching, which isn't yoga. I signed up for a local yoga class, not for PD, and pulled my back and neck out straining too hard to do the form. Big mistake on my part. I'll stick to classes that are meant for people with PD or do them via YouTube where I can move more slowly and carefully without being self-conscious.
Are there You Tube Yoga classes specifically for PD? If so could you name one or two?
Thank you.
I don't know I would think so. I'll look after my back heals. Or at least a class for seniors which might be easier.

Geared for PD patients. Look up Uturn power stretch. There isdifferent levels.
it aligns the Chakras. In other words, the placebo effect. No, seriously, its stretching, strengthening and movement. Its all good.
