Human Growth Factor from Lion's Mane Mushroom: Good or Bad?

I've been wondering about a couple of things.

First: I haven't seen any good directions on how to prepare it for consumption, whether to cook it or how to cook it properly, without hurting the benefits nor myself. Any clues?

Second: the purported benefit is consumption of human growth factor that the mushroom produces. But the question I have is, and definitely assuming that there is some reaction: introducing human growth factor to diet, if it gets into your brain at all through some process garners an effect, is there the potential for one's system to react to it as something "out of context" so to speak? Such that the reaction might be as to a toxin or hostile invader, such any resultant growth might be growth that you don't want ie triggers the immune system to turn it into cancer, or some other reaction that would trigger programmed cell death?

As far as I know, it increases nerve growth factor. Check mushroomreferences.com for mechanism of action.

Thanks, where do you get them, who are they, brand, and do you think the company can be trusted?

I think if you ate it as a food ie as a mushroom shouldn’t do harm? But maybe you need more than that to be effective? Hubby has taken it as a powder that I made into capsules but it’s hard to take the recommended amount like that. It says to make it into a hot drink but he didn’t fancy it like that.

Animal studies suggest that lion's mane mushroom and its extracts are very safe, even at high doses. However, allergic reactions in humans have been reported, so anyone with a known mushroom allergy should avoid it.

I’ve just received a Lions mane mushroom growing pack from a company in the U.K. and thought I d give it a go by growing them.

I ll firstly see if I have any success and secondly report if they taste ok when lightly cooked.

They take about 3 weeks to grow indoors once I ve found a favourable place in my house, at the correct temperature.

They’re delicious when sautéed.

My friend, if you want to get a certain result from this, you might want to consider taking the capsule form so you can have a standardized dosage. That way you know for sure how much you are taking. Then you can also modify the amount by taking more or less, depending on how you respond to it. Potency of the active ingredients or compounds may vary from mushroom to mushroom depending on a lot of factors and variations. This may be more consistent in good quality brand's capsule.

Another note, on taking human growth factor, I cant verify the source, but I heard or read somewhere that the only things that continue to grow on a body after a certain age is feet and noses! So if your shoes start getting tight....

..."the only things that continue to grow on a body after a certain age is feet and noses"...

Hmmm, maybe that explain why I'm taller lately.

Ok , thank you, any idea what would be a "good" brand?

I would just go on Amazon, look at the reviews, consider organic, highly rated. (then I would probably wind up just buy the cheapest one or the best value!)

Well long experience has taught me there's a lot of phony stuff on amazon. But to somebody else is better, and speaking of that, I have this OM brand lion's mane "certified organic" mushroom powder. I think I got it at a grocery store so maybe you'd find it in a health food section for a health food store about 100g.

I read somewhere it must contain “fruity body “.

When we moved to Ct two guys on scooters showed up and asked to check our property for mushrooms that could be cooked and added to Chinese dinners I've seen photos of Lion's Mane mushrooms but so far haven't found any,

I buy the powder and add about 1/4 teaspoon to my coffee twice a day, slightly more than what the package recommends. I've also read it's better cooked, and the coffee is hot. Also since coffee is strong and somewhat bitter itself (and I add cream and cocoa powder and cinnamon and monk fruit :o) I can't taste it at all.

Monk fruit? Where do you get that?

Grocery store. My sugar substitute of choice. You could use stevia, allulose, boca sweet...whatever you like/can find. I like splenda, too.

I just avoid sugar like the plague.

reporting back on growing the Lions Mane mushrooms. They did grow well after tending to them for a few weeks. I tried just sautéing in butter, they were delicious but slightly rubbery in texture. They were added to all vegetable dishes we made and tasted good but still had a denser texture. They didn’t last long as one crop doesn’t grow many. So to eat on a regular basis, growing your own, wouldn’t be viable.

We have both started taking Lions Mane supplements, that include the whole product.

They have definitely made a difference in so much as both my husband and I are having trouble going off to sleep and maintaining sleep as well through the night. I don’t have PD but my husband does and it was the only change in supplements for us both.

It did however have an added bonus in that we have been gardening in amongst all the other activities we do, and we have both had more energy, and not had a nap during the day.

It says Lions Mane helps with neurons and cognitive issues, maybe it also helps with energy production as well. We ve been taking 1000mgs per day, going to take 500 mgs today as we d both like a good nights sleep.

So it's been about 6 months now, anything more in the way of an effect of some kind?

Zella23 profile image
Zella23 in reply toMarionP

Hi no we ve stopped taking it at the moment as I said above, neither of us got to sleep at night. It’s happened with a couple of supplements recently tried a couple of times with taking Nicotinamide, similar problems with keeping my husband awake at night.

At the moment sticking to a few tried and tested supplements, vitamins and minerals. Uses red light hat every day and Cue1. My husband is still doing ok on low dose PD drugs according to Neuro, we saw him a couple of weeks ago.

Not trying anything new at the moment.

Dear Friends,I was looking to start Lion's Mane. I have two options shortlisted:

1. EVLution LM Extract - other ingredients: None

iherb.com/pal/referral/pdp/...

2. Bulk Supplements LM Extract - other ingredients: Organic Dextrin

bulksupplements.com/en-in/p...

Which one do you suggest?

MarionP profile image
MarionP in reply toJayPwP

Honestly I don't have the first clue. We don't know when you getting a powder if you're actually getting the real thing or if anything's been broken down in processing, and that's all the same problem with extract as well. And not knowing anything about the manufacturer or manufacturing and what is lost in extraction versus what is lost in processing, versus whether they're really lines mean mushrooms in the first place, or how old they are when started and whether that makes any difference, I think I am really not a person to suggest something because all I can offer is pure speculation. I don't know jackshit about it.

Tell you what though if you find out more from somebody who knows much more about it, where the trade offs advantages and disadvantages etc, I and and others would be very grateful if you pass on what you find out.

Something that one might at least try assuming they have the resources, try one for 6 months and then try the other for 6 months and report back to everybody. I think you'll be the one with the most expertise.
