Does anyone else have episodes of sudden onset of rapid over-breathing, along with weakness, poor gait and poor speech.
I have not seen this described as a side effect of medication , or part of pd.

I used to have brief periods of shortness of breath when I was off, but it has not happened in a long while.
For a while I was having the urge to hyperventilate upon retiring for the night, but that seems to have passed.
Yes this is an off symptom for me, but it is getting worse and I now have it when I’m on too. It is a complication of PD as well and I have read that levadopa maybe involved too.

Thanks for the reference It seems there is not much known about it, and few suggestions for treatment. It could easily be confused with an anxiety attack, but I doubt it is the cause. Difficulty breathing obviously causes anxiety. I have bee having some success with breathing exercises - only for mild attacks. (Breath in as slowly as possible and count up to three. Then breath out against pursed lips, to increase the pressure)Let me know if you come up with something.
Yes I have shortness of breath probably more as off symptom. Its not there all the time, I think if I get alittle anxious it happens
Do you also experience reflux or feel like your pills are sticking in your throat? I start rapid shallow breathing as meds wear off. It is much worse if I eat too much, too close to lying down, or eating dairy products. I think muscle rigidity and slow digestion leave lungs little room to expand. Any kind of anxiety makes it worse. Also, some pills leave a residue in your throat. If you notice a powder residue in the container you can imagine what it does to your throat.
Scoliosis also affects breathing. Ribs curve into the lung space. Bending over, stooping, and hunching make it worse.
I try eating small meals, timed carefully, avoid acidic food and eating late. Everything we do has a chain effect.
CKingPs. Thanks for the reply.Mine is not quite the same .I am beginning to think at my breathlessness is caused by tight rib and diaphram muscles Dystonia caused by the Levdopa.
I have it when I am off. Personally, I think it is due to decreased cardiac output. Dopamine has a lot to do with how strong your heartbeat is. When I was an ICU nurse we used to give IV dopamine to people in heart failure to increase the rate a little bit, but mostly the strength of the contraction. Another reason I think this is that even if I walk up the stairs I am so short of breath I can hardly even talk. So exercise seems to compound it.
