Pro Resolving Mediators : not your typical anti inflammatory. Works via a unique mechanism

This brand was recommended by Dr. Chris Masterjohn to help end chronic inflammation.

Anyone using pro resolving mediators?

we found that SPMs can improve neuronal survival and increase microglial phagocytosis of amyloid beta (Aβ) in in vitro studies, indicating that stimulating resolution of inflammation may be a potential therapeutic target in AD

well now this one does look promising. Now would need replication from other teams and then in vivo with regard to potential for damage from immune system compromised in other parts of the person, i.e. outside the central nervous system...and then may need something to counter from the cell support dysfunctions imposed by tau protein wreckage, looking like AD is a one-two punch disease, one causes the wreckage while the other prevents the wreckage from being cleared and starvation being stopped (one punch comes from amyloid, the other from tau, one is damage and destruction while the other is clearance of the trash and getting feeding and healing, normal growing and waste elimination going again). That's for AD... What it might mean for PD I wouldn't have the faintest clue.

SPMs can be thought of as the fire fighters that extinguish inflammation by activating innate resolution programs.

some reports strongly suggest dysregulated mechanisms of resolution serve as the underlying basis for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and neuromyelitis optica [71, 80, 134, 148, 149]. A detailed overview of studies in which SPMs have been tested in different preclinical disease models

Role of Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators in Reducing Neuroinflammation in Neurodegenerative Disorders 2022 frontiersin.org/articles/10...

"In PD, data from in vitro, in vivo, and observational studies suggest SPM are able to cross the blood-brain barrier, inhibit microglial activation and decrease induced markers of inflammation, possibly as a result of their ability to downregulate NFκB signaling pathways (Xu et al., 2013, 2017; Tian et al., 2015). Further, treatment with these lipid-derived mediators may improve behavioral deficit as a result of the protection of DA neurons and prevents the onset of PD by attenuating neuroinflammation."

This is the doctor who discovered SPMs. The tempo of this is very slow.

The recent evidence that different cells of the CNS express several SPM receptors (Figure 1) suggest that the activation of pro-resolution pathways are also occurring in the brain and that SPMs might be critical in modulating the crosstalk between glial cells and neurons and thus in affecting the initiation and progression of several neuropathologies.

Metagenics SPM Active: metagenics.com/spm-active

18-hydroxy-eicosapentaenoic acid (18-HEPE)

17-hydroxy-docosahexaenoic acid (17-HDHA) and

14-hydroxy-docosahexaenoic acid (14-HDHA).

in reply toBolt_Upright

I posted that above. I’m trying to get in the Bolt mindset to figure out where your research is goingWhat are you thinking?

Btw, Metagenics SPM was recommended by the amazing Dr. Chris Masterjohn. The depth of his knowledge is amazing.

I tried to get the price on Metagenics and it asked for my practitioner code. So then I wanted to note the ingredients and see if I could find other SPMs and their ingredients.

Same ingredients. Metagenics says take 2 capsules, Amazon one says take one. Amazon looks like it might have half of what the Metagenics has. Need a code to order Metagenics.

This reminds me of Rejuvant which is really just AKG which can be bought elsewhere. Btw you will find Rejuvant interesting. Back to SPM, I look forward to your thoughts.

I’m prone to chronic bouts of optimism. ☺️

Have you had any luck nailing down which SPMs the experts think would be helpful to PD? It seems like there are a LOT of SPMs.

in reply toBolt_Upright

NoBut I didn’t dig in to it more.

This one says it is SPM, but it is really Alaskan Cod Liver Oil: amazon.com/DaVinci-Laborato...

in reply toBolt_Upright

Sketchy! Actually, it can come from Alaskan Cod Oil but I’m inclined to think most of what is on Amazon is 💩

Yes, all of those SPMs can come from Cod liver oil, the same as gasoline comes from crude oil, but you would not want to fill your car up with crude oil.

in reply toBolt_Upright

Very good analogy Did I find a good one Bolt? Maybe another piece of arsenal? Any news on the anti viral you found? I’m excited about the prospect of that as it’s a new angle for me.

Taking Cod liver oil can really boost your 18-HEPE. 1 teaspoon equals 4.5 grams.

Not a substitute for SPMs, but I have a bottle of Cod Liver Oil in the fridge.

Turmeric and Omega-3

The most biologically active Omega-3s are EPA and DHA, which are highly concentrated in fish. Omega-3s are also found in plants, including flax and walnuts, but plant-based Omega-3s need to be converted by the body into the more usable EPA and DHA.

EPA is an important fat for heart health, and DHA is a key building block of the brain, with links to cognitive function and depression.

Interestingly, our bodies are not equipped to efficiently convert plant-based Omega-3s into EPA and DHA. Only ~5% of plant based Omega-3 is converted to EPA and less than 1% to DHA!

So, can you assist the body’s conversion of Omega-3 with turmeric? A recent animal study shows that turmeric boosts the conversion of plant-based Omega-3s into DHA in the brain. The effect was major— with about 50% additional DHA when turmeric was added to the diet.
