A friend (NOT pwp) is taking Ativan
for depression and he told me that it also
helps with balance.
Is anyone else taking Ativan that can
corroborate his information?

Interesting. My balance is becoming my main problem .Are you struggling with that?
Be careful with Ativan. It is a controlled drug here because it is addictive. My husband was given Ativan before his BCG treatments for bladder CA to calm his anxieties. They gave it very sparingly. Please refer to my post on probiotics PS 128 and coronet duo which helped my husband’s balance amongst other things.
Ativan is Lorazepam and is commonly used for anxiety, especially nowadays, but it's one of about 15 Benzodiazapine drugs and benzos don't help with balance, unless it's a newly discovered side-effect. Most doctors won't prescribe it for more than 30 days but there are exceptions.
Ativan used for more than a week or two can cause physical dependence (as opposed to psychological addiction which can also result). It's a benzodiazepine, and any benzo can contribute to dementia.
It can be very hard to stop if you take it long term. If you have any other options, consider them. However if you don't and decide to try ativan, ask how quickly it helps with balance. If it's a quick result, and it doesn't help, you can stop before you get into dependence territory. If it does help and you decide the benefits outweigh the risks, it will probably also help with sleep and anxiety.
My mum was given Ativan when she was dying from cancer and I would say it made her more wobbly and totally confused.
My doc had me on less than 1 mg per day - very small dosage - when first diagnosed 8 months ago….found it contributed slightly to an Unbalance - both ‘feeling’ and Physical - and with other benzo issues, would not recommend you get started.
Ativan is a benzodiazepine class of drugs that can cause drowsiness and loss of balance. Ironically it is prescribed for people with balance (vertigo) issues caused by vestibular inner ear problems ei. Meniere's disease. Not a treatment however for PWP balance problems.
Hi❤️ I have had PD for about ten years. I take Selegiline for my PD drug. I also take a Lexapro and an Ativan daily. If it means anything, I have NEVER lost my balance and fallen because of my PD. Ativan may have helped with that, I don’t know.
