Strategies To Reverse Gut Dysbiosis in Chronic Disease (Lucy Mailing, PhD)

I stumbled across this video today, and (assuming Lucy Mailing is legit) I learned a great deal about a lot.

I'm going to start with just the link to the video, then add more comments on individual things I found interesting in the video.

Exercise and Diet are two things you can do to get your microbiome out of dysbiosis. Diet I knew. I was not aware how important exercise was.

Ketones and Isobutyrate can make up for low butyrate.

She talks a lot about ketones and fasting. Connects to the whole keto for PK thing, except I thought keto for PK was all about ketones to the brain instead of glucose, but it is also ketones to the gut to fix the gut.

Good stuff! But I'm not going to get any sleep tonight reviewing all this! Thanks for all your research. Diet is one thing I have problems keeping up with. I can exercise and it definitely has slowed my progression, but I like sweets too much.

Bolt_Upright in reply to laglag

Got to give up the sweets. I almost died of the flu 2 years ago. Spent 2 weeks in the hospital, came out with constant AFIB and off work on oxygen for almost 3 months.

I switched to only drinking water, no processed food, gluten free, and low carb. Basically keto but I did not know it. Went from 225 to 172 it 6 months.

I like the SCD diet with intermittent fasting. breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

Here is a joke I made up once I got fit:

Q: What's the difference between a pizza party and a heroin den?

A: People at a heroin den usually are not indoctrinating children.

Cake is the devil!

I do have a tablespoon of raw honey every day in my tea, but that is medicinal :)

That dark humor joke is so extremely true!!My children are learning are on a reduced gluten and reduced sugar diet and are acclimating well!

I really appreciate your research and posts!

You’re so right. It’s funny, but my whole family is a bunch of sugar carbs cravers. It truly is an addiction that overrides one’s sense of self preservation. I’ve heard of the specific carbohydrate diet. Will have to look it up. You have inspired me! Especially with the flu and wouldn’t you know it but I get the flu almost every year. I wonder why…

Godiv profile image
Godiv in reply to laglag

I am with you laglag.I have an awful time giving up sweet stuff. And I know it’s not good for me but something overrides the sensible voice inside my head. But I’m trying now; it really is kind of an addiction. I don’t remember eating like this before diagnosis but I probably did.☹️

A low fiber diet (in the absence of ketones) promotes gut dysbiosis

So this slide makes me think that if you are in ketosis you can have a healthy microbiome without fiber? Or maybe ketosis can help fix your microbiome?

All of the causes of dysbiosis have one thing in common: Host mediated inflammation.

(apologies to CC for saying this but) I'm not a college graduate, so take my comment for what it is worth, but this slide leads me back to my excitement about niacin:

We found that niacin shows anti‐inflammatory and anti‐apoptotic properties through downregulation of colonic inflammatory cytokine levels, suppression of vascular permeability, and inhibition of colonic epithelium apoptosis by activation of DP1 receptor in macrophages, endothelial cells, and colonic epithelium.Mar 27, 2017

This slide also points out that artificial sweeteners cause dysbiosis. This is what keeps me away from Manitol (I did not go to college, do not follow my lead, eventually I may change my mind).

It’s funny you mention Mannitol. I had some this morning and I was wondering about the unhealthy aspect of it because it just doesn’t seem to digest right. I mean there’s the gas and everything but it sort of hangs on my stomach. It doesn’t hurt but it doesn’t feel normal either. The artificiality is a little scary.

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to Godiv

But then I found this and am even more confused. Leaning Mannitol.

Godiv profile image
Godiv in reply to Bolt_Upright

Gosh it is confusing. I guess you just have to go by how it feels. If it helps the symptoms of Parkinson’s, it’s worth it. I guess we could assume if it helps the symptoms, then it’s helping the gut. You just helped me think it out a bit more. So maybe it makes sense that it’s OK to take if it does help. ?

Danshensu Bingpian Zhi (DBZ) is a synthetic version of two compounds found in Chinese medicine. Also known as tanshinol borneol ester derived from Salvia miltiorrhiza, is a synthetic derivative of natural compounds used in traditional Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory activity. Composed of danshensu and borneol. Or maybe Radix Salviae Milthiorrhizae. More research needed.

DBZ (Danshensu Bingpian Zhi), a Novel Natural Compound Derivative, Attenuates Atherosclerosis in Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice. 2017.

Conclusions: DBZ potentially has antiatherosclerotic effects that involve the inhibition of inflammation, macrophage migration, leukocyte adhesion, and foam cell formation. These results suggest that DBZ may be used as a therapeutic agent for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.

I'd rather find the original natural medicine. They may have synthesized it to make it proprietary.

Maybe the most interesting slide! Stratagies to support gut hypoxia (the opposite of dysbiosis). Interesting list:

- Mesalamine (don't want that).

- Danshensu Bingpian Zhi (DBZ) (can't get that).

- Butyrate!

- Ketones!

- Fasting/Calorie Restriction!

- Exercise!

- Stress Management.

- CBD!

- Sulforaphane: a sulfur-rich compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, and cabbage. It has been shown to provide powerful health benefits. In these foods, it's in the inactive form glucoraphanin that belongs to the glucosinolate family of plant compounds.

I bought some MSM, bu not the same thing: What is the difference between sulforaphane and MSM?

They are two totally different things. Having used them both I can say that real sulforaphane is really powerful. MSM is good for binding with heavy metals and helping your body detox. Sulforaphane activates the "NRF2" pathway, which the body uses to do genetic repair and regulate a lot of things.

- Curcumin! My bottle just arrived today! Be careful when shopping for curcumin. You want 95% curcuminoids. That is the good stuff. Most bottles say 95% curcuminoids but when you read the bottle the tiny portion that is curcuminoids is 95% curcuminoids so really you get maybe 17% curcuminoids. Mine looks legit: Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95

- Iberogast: Iberogast is an over-the-counter herbal formulation that has much research to support its usefulness in easing the symptoms of functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Iberogast has been in use for over fifty years. It can be thought of as a "blend of bitters," harkening back to a time when bitters were used extensively as digestive aids.

Does Iberogast cause liver damage?

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German drugmaker will add a warning of rare cases of liver damage to the label of prescription-free stomach relief drops Iberogast after Germany's drugs regulator said a death was linked to the product.Sep 12, 2018

- Omega 3s, CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a fatty acid found in meat and dairy that is believed to have various health benefits

- Saccharomyces boulardii: A yeast probiotic. Looks like too much to me.

Elderly: The elderly might have an increased risk of fungal infection when taking Saccharomyces boulardii. Stay on the safe side and avoid use (webmd).

Read the safety info here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

- Fructo-oligosaccharides: A group of naturally occurring carbohydrates that can help promote the growth of beneficial flora in the gastrointestinal tract.
