Neuroticism as a cause?
"To account for the possibility that the participants were in the early stages of the disease when they took the test, the researchers excluded all the cases that occurred within the first 5 years of the follow-up."
5 years very likely isnt enough to rule out an early PD symptom (some people have overt motor symptoms 5 prior to dx, nevermind non motor symptoms), and it seems to me that the reported neuroticism is much more likely an early symptom than a cause.
I think it's a case of the chicken or the egg. Which really comes first? In other words , is neuroticiism the result of neurotransmitter imbalance ? Remember, dopaminergic neurons have to be 70 percent depleted before pd symptoms are apparent, but how far depleted before personality affects begin? Hmm! I wouldn't think personality causes neuronal death! But I can agree that it very well may be an early sign.
