An excellent article by Ben, where he discusses the pros and cons of 4 available interventions for PD patients with advanced stage. He discusses the following 4 procedures available currently:

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Cell Replacement Therapy (CRT)

Focused Ultrasound (FUS)

Gene Therapy (GT)

It's good, but I think it's simplistic with regard to FUS. As lenamm has pointed out repeatedly, there are multiple forms of FUS. They cannot be lumped together as if they are all the same. I'm not sure about Canada where the author is from, but at least in the US, it's not accurate to say that FUS is still in the trial stage. Two distinct forms of FUS for Parkinson's Disease are approved by the FDA in the United States. HOWEVER, PTT, the form which seems most promising to me, is still only available in Switzerland, but trials are underway in Japan and are about to begin in the United States, as pointed out in another post by MB Anderson.

We need to differentiate among the various types of focused ultrasound. The author of this article did not do that.

Diagnosis 2008. Greatly diminished therapeutic value from sinemet and desire to have a more normal life while our four boys were moving through high school and college led me to DBS in 2014. Near miraculous results (most important was effect on dystonia which left me hobbled just melted away). Fear nearing the end of therapeutic value (now in 2021) from DBS but still far better off since 2014 surgery.
