Licorice Root Extract Helps (A Little)

------------------------------------ 100 mg of licorice root extract ---------------------------------

I have been taking a low dose of licorice root extract for about seven months. I have experienced no adverse effects. I did not think it was doing anything so I stopped for a few days. I noticed a small but definite worsening of my symptoms, which reversed when I resumed taking it. Similarly, there is a controlled study that showed a small benefit.

Licorice is an MAO-B inhibitor and may have other modes of action. It has adverse affects at higher dosages. See the details in my report, Licorice - Candy Or Medication, which I published here: tinyurl.com/y9mjdhjt

Park_Bear, thank you for sharing this with us. I got a bottle of Solaray Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra whole root extract) after reading about its anti-inflammatory, immune stimulating and antiviral properties against SARS and related coronaviruses, but have not used it yet.

Which brand are you taking ? I've seen references to black licorice which might be the same but not sure how many varieties are out there.

I use Bulk Supplements Licorice Root Extract Powder from Amazon:

amazon.com/gp/product/B01MZ...

I measure it out using the "pinch" measuring spoon from this set:

amazon.com/gp/product/B002X...

which amounts to 160 mg. I take it twice daily.

Once upon a time Bulk Supplements stated this product was standardized to 22% glycyrrhizin although I no longer see that statement. At that concentration my dosage amounts to 70 mg of glycyrrhizin daily. Please check the information under "Safety And Dosage" in my report and make your own decision as to what dosage you wish to take.

Thank you for the details on licorice supply and dosage. This herb has very impressive list of benefits although each of us varies in biochemistry and we need to be careful with Licorice as it can cause some side effects.

In regards to CYP3A4 - I have 1 homozygous and 1 heterozygous variants out of ten CYP3A4 genes on my report, so I assume that my CYP3A4 action is already inhibited. Would you know anything about how supplementing with Licorice would work with this particular genetic profile?

Great stuff. If you don't mind (and I'll understand if you do) - what's your dose and brand?

I use Licorice root natural chew sticks, purchased on Amazon. I put a stick each week into my cold water stored in the fridge and let the sweet sap release into the water along with a lemon. It’s tasty and refreshing. Probably not good for those with high blood pressure.
