Exercise alternative to closed gyms

Went to workout today and the rec center was closed because of COVID-19. I don't have a stationary bicycle and weight machines at home. Other PwP here will probably face similar situations and need alternatives, especially when it is raining like today.

Yoga can be done anywhere.

That can replace some exercises. How about replacing aerobic exercises?

Fast walk in a park I guess.

medium fast walk uphill with a 55 pound Black Munsterlander (medium size dog that wants to run all day) an old hunting breed... aim for a 20 minute mile and then try shortening your time. Have fun! Oh, forgot to add doing it in a well treed area for solitude and clean air.

taught yoga for pd, yesterday in the local park. It was the most beautiful hour I have had in a while... the fresh air, deep breathing, and warmth of the sun on my skin...

Thank you. Because of Coronavirus I am self isolating. I have plenty of Pilates, Pd Warrior and general strength exercises I can do at home, but I was thrilled to find a boxing workout in your link.

I have a comment about exercise after having a hip replacement. I am 79 and recently read that exercise can cause the deterioration of a hip replacement. Since I don't want to have another hip replacement, I have started to limit my walking which was being done inside my home with a walker. Another question is how do people with Parkinson's manage to exercise when there is loss of balance. Just curious. No need to comment unless someone has special knowledge of the topics I mentioned: balance problems and exercise after a hip replacement. Thanks!

Your post was very helpful to me. I also have severe back pain (thankfully , no balance issues currently) and, with the pool closed, I need alternative exercise. Currently, I can stand for 5 minutes and then I need to give my back a break, do another 5 minutes, repeat... What did you do when you first started walking to overcome that kind of situation or do you have some suggestions? The weather is fantastic this week and I used to love walking!! Thanks for helping me dream of getting back out there!!!

I live in a small town in the Wyoming Rockies. The local rec center shut down for the next three months. There is an asphalt half-mile path that surrounds the complex. There are exercise stations all along the path. So no problem for me. But today it's blizzarding; 30mph wind and blowing snow sideways. When I was younger I enjoyed fighting the wind and cold even though it meant not getting a decent workout. But no more. Luckily I have a treadmill. I can stop to do pushups or planks or crunches. So why am I on my laptop rather than the treadmill? Is laziness a symptom of PD?

Don't tell my neurologist, but I bought a 21-speed bicycle. My old 10-speed racing bicycle is almost 50 years old. Note the extra gears are for going slower.

My neurologist also said "Don't walk large dogs. They might pull you over, and cause you to fall." He frowned at lifting bar weights because of safety. Some of the PwP are doing these hear. As PD progresses, we probably need to judge when to stop.

Now that I'm using a regular bicycle, I don't want to go back to a stationary bike. A regular bicycle has less mental fatigue. So, I'm concentrating on safety: bright clothes, flashing lights in the daytime, and rear view mirrors, the kind you wear as opposed to mounted on the bike seem more reliable. I'm so used to toe chips that I do better with them than without them. The new style toe clips seem much better, and the gear shifting systems are definitely much better.

The good thing about 21 speeds is the low gears allow you to keep pedaling fast and you don't need to stand up pedaling up hill. You can stay on the saddle.
