Went to workout today and the rec center was closed because of COVID-19. I don't have a stationary bicycle and weight machines at home. Other PwP here will probably face similar situations and need alternatives, especially when it is raining like today.
Exercise alternative to closed gyms - Cure Parkinson's
Exercise alternative to closed gyms
Yoga can be done anywhere.
That can replace some exercises. How about replacing aerobic exercises?
Fast walk in a park I guess.
NeuroFit BC has a lot of good exercises. See m.youtube.com/playlist?list...
DailydosePd,com. First 30 days free. Use promo code MOVE to get half off first three months.
I have a comment about exercise after having a hip replacement. I am 79 and recently read that exercise can cause the deterioration of a hip replacement. Since I don't want to have another hip replacement, I have started to limit my walking which was being done inside my home with a walker. Another question is how do people with Parkinson's manage to exercise when there is loss of balance. Just curious. No need to comment unless someone has special knowledge of the topics I mentioned: balance problems and exercise after a hip replacement. Thanks!
hi sleezy well i have been exercising now for the last 6 or 7 years every day about 6 klm a day in parks here the parks i go to have different types of things you can exercise like different metal bars you can work on i also have ciatic pain on my back very painful but i dont let that stop me when i finish my fast walking the pain dont bother me i take the usual things for parkinsons and 2 pain killers a day one in the morning one before bedtime i have a very strong body now pills help but the exercising is the most important thing you can do.im 74 this year i also stopped eating meat as for balance i stand on one leg for balance both right and left for as long as i can if i had a movie camera i would get some one to take pics of what i do still painful sometimes but thats ok so dont stop exercising my friend or it will bring you down regards john.
Your post was very helpful to me. I also have severe back pain (thankfully , no balance issues currently) and, with the pool closed, I need alternative exercise. Currently, I can stand for 5 minutes and then I need to give my back a break, do another 5 minutes, repeat... What did you do when you first started walking to overcome that kind of situation or do you have some suggestions? The weather is fantastic this week and I used to love walking!! Thanks for helping me dream of getting back out there!!!
well it just happened today i took another man with me he did not know he had p.k so i show ed him what to do he was in very bad shape ill try and get a pic of him and my self hes around my age bad arm and well bad all over explained to him about the pills he needed so ill take him with me now as hes never done exercise before.its nice to get out there walking.regards john.
I live in a small town in the Wyoming Rockies. The local rec center shut down for the next three months. There is an asphalt half-mile path that surrounds the complex. There are exercise stations all along the path. So no problem for me. But today it's blizzarding; 30mph wind and blowing snow sideways. When I was younger I enjoyed fighting the wind and cold even though it meant not getting a decent workout. But no more. Luckily I have a treadmill. I can stop to do pushups or planks or crunches. So why am I on my laptop rather than the treadmill? Is laziness a symptom of PD?
Don't tell my neurologist, but I bought a 21-speed bicycle. My old 10-speed racing bicycle is almost 50 years old. Note the extra gears are for going slower.
Now that I'm using a regular bicycle, I don't want to go back to a stationary bike. A regular bicycle has less mental fatigue. So, I'm concentrating on safety: bright clothes, flashing lights in the daytime, and rear view mirrors, the kind you wear as opposed to mounted on the bike seem more reliable. I'm so used to toe chips that I do better with them than without them. The new style toe clips seem much better, and the gear shifting systems are definitely much better.
The good thing about 21 speeds is the low gears allow you to keep pedaling fast and you don't need to stand up pedaling up hill. You can stay on the saddle.
