Hyperbaric oxygen chamber

Anyone used a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to help with Parkinsons? From what I’m reading it helps with both motor and non motor symptoms and with the depression and anxiety that accompany Parkinsons.

I've never had a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, but have always been interested in it. The cost seems a bit prohibitive unless insurance will cover it. This link suggests an average cost of $350 per treatment and it seems that quite a few treatments (dozens?) are needed on average :

Right now Parkinsons is not on the list for medicare to cover it unfortunately

That is too bad if HBO turns out to be useful for PWPs, and of course it appears that it may according to this clinical report of a PWP who used HBO to apparent good effect!

My brother had that treatment a few times, it helped him a lot. He had chron disease, and when he had operation the recovery was very fast beacuse of the oxygen. In Croatia it is till cheap for other countrie standards exept ours... I think one treatment cost abou 100 €. But for the better results you have to go minimum 3 times. I've heard that is helping for Autism. My brother said that there was one boy who, after the 4th treatmet, hugged a nurse witch was huge step for someone who has Autism.

If only there were more chambers available at lower costs, I think doctors would be more willing to try it on different health issues since it seems to be fairly non-invasive and straightforward. Either you respond within 6 treatments or you don't.

I can only imagine how busy an office that only specializes in and does HBOT treatments would be if doctors could freely prescribe it and insurance covered it!

Yes, many times. It helped the symptoms a lot fir my husband. He had atherosclerosis so getting a better distribution of O might have been the reason it helped him so much.

I asked 2 different neurologists about it. One said that there were no studies to prove that it would help, the other said that there was nothing worth $6000 (apparently the cost of the procedure) to be expected from the treatment. If you decide to do it please keep us informed.

I had this once. I really don't think the cost benefit is worth it. Would rather splash the cash on supplements, such as B1, mannitol, celery seed extract and CoQ10. Or an exercise class, skipping rope or stationary bike.

I live in the UK and heard a talk about it by a man who has run the service in the Isle of Man for over 20 years or.so

He was talking about a boy who had development problems from birth due to oxygen deficiency at birth

In Isle of Man he said that the heaith service approve and pay for it for all sorts of problems. eg Diabetec ulceration..he claims that there have no been diabetec amputations there as a result. Population about 60 000 ..

There is a chamber in the Trafford park Manchester area.

I do not think that is was very expensive, here in mainland UK is run by a charity or non profit organization.

The procedure evidently is to sit in a chamber with may be 5 or more people with nose masks on for an hour or two.. 4 or 5 days a week in quick succession for 20 days.

I am sure that you will find it makes you feel better. Whether it's useful for all Parkinson's patients I don't know .

J didn't proceed because of the regular time commitment.

But I don't think it would do any harm.

And I do not think that it was too expensive. but don't have the information to hand just now

I have found some info

re the charity runing the oxygen therapy wanted a reg fee of 10 GBPounds

and 17 GBP per session [ 20 ] and 4GBP for masks

£390 FOR 20 SESSIONS

Further to your request for information – as an MS therapy Centre we offer High Dose Oxygen Therapy here at the centre and I have attached some information that I hope helps.

I will also ask our technical advisor if they are aware of any published papers that have been produced that will give you further information to make your decision as we are a self-refer charity here in Trafford Park.

We do allow individuals with other conditions to use our chambers so that should not be a problem. I will attach several forms one of which is a membership form, you will need this to access any treatments at the centre. We ask for a donation of around £10 for the membership which is renewed annually.

To use our chambers you will need a GPs signature on the GP Notification form. You will need to check that there are no contraindications to having oxygen treatment i.e ear or sinus problems (so you will need your GP to check these ) and if there is any other reason why they feel you should not have the treatment. So you will need you GP/Oncologist/Specialist to advise you on this.

You will need to commit to 20 sessions as close together as possible i.e. at least two session a week until the 20 are complete.

This protocol is set by our Consultant in Dundee. This helps to Kick-start the immune system. It does seem that when this protocol isn’t followed the effects are greatly reduced.

You receive the oxygen via a mask. We lend you one for your first 5 sessions, but then you will need to buy one at a cost of £40.

We sell them here at the centre. You need to be aware that the oxygen is taken in a 7 seated chamber for about 1hr 15mins. The chambers are operated by our fully trained technicians and you are monitored throughout the session

Attached is a Members consent form that you will need to sign. As we are a charity who does not receive any statutory funding we ask for a donation of £17 per session. I will also attach some useful info regarding other things that we have on offer at the centre.

So u have had benefit, for nonPD Sx , or only ur patients have? I think ur message indicated U do not have PD, is that correct? An oversimplification : it would feed our oxygen deprived cells but might also aid oxidation (bad- we want antioxidants/ not more oxidation) , right?

I have read about a study done in Russia it was very successful. My wife suffers from PD we tried to get it done in Israel but the health ministry has not listed this procedure as a treatment for PD. We would travel to one of the many treatment clinics that offer this treatment but she can not travel. The cost is not that expensive prices differ Spain has 2 centers and in Europe it is found in many hospitals, the USA has lot's of centers. The medical industry appears to be convinced drugs are the answer but side effects of the drugs often make the condition worse even doctors agree long term use of drugs cause dangerous results.
